They were living off the original deposit. I told the manager I would try to get the deposit from the new tenant to make things easy. After a couple months of the new tenant trying to get out of paying a deposit, I went back to the management to get my money. (After all, I didn't have a contract with the new tenant.) The manager kept saying "it's complicated" and "you never told us you were leaving". I sent multiple formal notices to the manager's supervisor about my leaving the premises and the manager's inability to explain why I wasn't getting my deposit back, to which they never responded. Eventually, the manager convinced the new tenant to pay me the money. This was 6 months after I had moved out. When I collected the money and asked the manager why it had become so complicated, she paused, as if trying to think of what to say, and then told me it was because I hadn't given them written notice of my leaving the apartment.
