My Little Corner of Oakland
August 14, 2015I used to call this area the de-militarized zone, because it used to be said that if you lived above MacArthur Blvd in Oakland then you lived above where most of the crime occurred in the city. I worked as a 911 Dispatcher, and found out that that's not necessarily true. I discovered that although there is no virtual "safe" place, it does help when you have good neighbors who look out for each other. And that's what we have in my neighborhood. I have lived on the top floor of a duplex on the ...corner of 35th Avenue and California Street for the past eight years. It's a very quiet neighborhood, with very nice neighbors. Buses run up and down 35th Avenue for easy convenience to all public transportation; and a few blocks down on MacArthur Blvd, you can get on a bus and ride all the way downtown. We are within walking distance of several neighborhood restaurants, a fresh produce market, a local fitness gym, a bank, and an excellent elementary school.
