Brooklyn Overview
Exploring Brooklyn homes for rent for your next move? Living in this NYC borough means you’ve got access to tons of restaurants and other amenities — with many being in walking distance! Brooklyn has cultural attractions, historic places to visit, and exciting events to attend all year round. It’s also just a subway or bus ride away from Manhattan, giving you even more attractions and events to enjoy — or a convenient commute to and from work. But what should you know about living here? We’ll go over what to expect as a Brooklyn resident, from what the weather’s like in all seasons to what to see and do!
What is the history of Brooklyn?
Did you know that a Revolutionary War battle took place here? In 1776, the British army fought — and almost destroyed — the American army in Brooklyn. Long before that, in the early 1600s, the Dutch settled in the area and established the Village of Brooklyn. During the late 1700s, after the war, the village began to grow and thrive as more immigrants settled here. Long Island sent farm-grown crops through Brooklyn to Manhattan. The East River served as a hub for trade and industry. Brooklyn’s population exploded to almost 80,000 people by the mid-1800s. Today, the borough is home to nearly 3 million people!
How is the weather in Brooklyn?
You can expect hot summers here, with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s and 70s. Heat waves can bump temps to the 90s at times! Winter temps are usually above freezing during the day, with highs in the 40s. Lows tend to go below freezing — but not too far below. Spring and fall have high temps in the pleasant 60s and 70s range and lows in the 50s and 40s. Brooklyn usually gets some snow and ice, especially in February. Occasional snowstorms can bring more to the area, making it a fun time for sledding! You get rainy days throughout the year here, with April being the rainiest month.
How do I get around town?
Not sure if you need a car here? Most people can get around just fine without one! In fact, the MTA runs many bus routes throughout the borough and to neighboring boroughs, including Manhattan. You can catch express buses to Manhattan from some parts of Brooklyn. There’s also the subway. The MTA has 170 subway stations in the borough with local service and service to Manhattan and Queens. Traveling to other cities? There’s an Amtrak station in NYC’s Penn Station and a Greyhound bus station near downtown Brooklyn. JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports provide flights all over the country — and to other countries. LaGuardia and JFK are close by in neighboring Queens for added convenience!
What is the Brooklyn commute like?
You can’t completely avoid dealing with traffic and congestion as a resident here. But you can cut down on commute times, depending on where you look for homes for rent in Brooklyn. Homes close to subway stations or bus stops can help you get to and from work a bit faster — but the average commute time overall is still around 53 minutes! Most people here take public transportation, so expect crowded buses and trains during rush hour. Planning to drive? About a quarter of people here rely on a car to commute. I-278, I-495, and I-478 are a few major roads in the area. The Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and Williamsburg Bridge all connect the borough to Manhattan.
Why live in Brooklyn, NY?
You’ll be right next door to Manhattan! That means you can catch a play on Broadway, stroll through Central Park, and do tons of shopping! But Brooklyn itself also gives you lots of amenities and attractions, including nightlife, dining, and arts and culture. Living in Brooklyn rental homes also means you can get around easily without a car — so no gas money or rush hour driving needed! Several industries in the area, including healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, and finance, offer great job opportunities. Moving here as a family? Brooklyn has good schools and plenty of family-friendly things to see and do for all ages!
What Brooklyn landmarks should I see?
The Met isn’t the only art museum in NYC. The Brooklyn Museum offers the second-biggest collection of art in the area, with roughly 500,000 paintings, sculptures, and other artwork! For iconic landmarks, there’s the Brooklyn Bridge. Take in stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and East River from this famous bridge. Take a stroll through the Green-Wood Cemetery to see Victorian mausoleums and other monuments in a peaceful setting. Explore over 50 acres of gardens filled with cherry blossoms and other flora at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. And, of course, there’s Coney Island — complete with a historic wooden roller coaster and other rides.
What is there to do around Brooklyn?
You’ll have plenty of places to dine and shop in your new home! But being in Brooklyn rentals offers more than just shops and restaurants. Take a walking tour through Bushwick to see the best of local street art. Visit the New York Aquarium to see sharks and other marine life and the Prospect Park Zoo to see kangaroos and other animals from around the world. Looking for outdoor places to unwind? Head to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Promenade, and Brooklyn Bridge Park to enjoy the outdoors. Bring the kids to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum — the oldest museum of its kind in the U.S. — for interactive exhibits.
Where is the best place to move in Brooklyn?
What kind of neighborhood do you want to live in? Rental homes in Brooklyn give you tons of options to consider! Looking for an artsy area? That’s what Williamsburg offers, along with boutique stores and trendy cafes. Park Slope and Fort Greene have historic brownstones, with Park Slope offering a family-friendly environment and Fort Greene having lots of cultural attractions. Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass — or DUMBO — is filled with older buildings and beautiful views of Manhattan.
