What is the history of Portland?
Portland’s history as a city dates back to the early 1800s. Settlers and fur traders made their way to the area via the Oregon Trail during this time. But it wasn’t known as Portland until 1845. Before then, the area was called Stumptown thanks to all of the trees that were cut down to make settlements. So, when did Portland come into existence? It officially became a city in 1843. And a coin toss determined its name! Portland was named after prominent businessman Francis Pettygrove’s hometown of Portland, Maine. Over the years, the city became a port town, with scenic bridges and tugboats gliding along the Willamette River. Today, it’s a bustling city that many love to call home!
