The Clinton House

The Clinton House has been a part of the Poughkeepsie apartment community since 1765 when it was used as official headquarters of the new state government. It was damaged in a fire and rebuilt in 1783. Since then it has remained a vital part of the areas history and architectural culture. It now serves the Clinton House apartments community as the Duchess County Historical Society and houses a library with more than 10,000 books and historical documents. The house was named for George Clinton, former Governor of the state of New York but he never resided there. Instead the stately mansion has been purchased and refurbished by several prestigious New York societies in the interest of keeping it intact for the enjoyment of the public and the local apartment's residents. Great legislators and government officials in the history of New York and the country have debated and discussed matters in these hallowed halls. Present days, the massive library included in this building helps many Poughkeepsie apartments residents interested in genealogy to search out their family trees and history.
