Super Man Super and a Super Apartment
September 30, 2015My Super is Super Man. His name is Chris and I can't imagine living in a building without him. I've lived in my apartment for over three years and Chris has been here for many years before. He's the type of man who's always there to help and also does it with a smile, a nonchalantness that is calming and reassuring, and with zero expectations. Though I try and gift him with bottles of expensive, non-kosher wine I bring home from events. It was 3AM and I was locked out of my building that early ...morning. I had called both roommates. I had rung my doorbell. Nothing. I did not know what to do. So I did what no one should ever do - I rang my Super's doorbell. Chris came upstairs and let me in. There was no hint of anger. So look of disapproval. I apologized profusely and he shrugged it off despite the hour and that I had most likely also woken up members of his family. The incident spurred me to create a list-serve of some of the other residents of my building so that should it happen again, I had others to reach out to at 3AM. The other remarkable thing about Chris is his breadth of knowledge. Whether he's explaining building information as to why we now have security cameras outside to the different types of light bulbs we should consider using since he's always coming to change a blown out bulb. Every time I get a chance to speak with Chris, it's like I am taking a class on practical living. My apartment is the first one as you enter my building. It's why I want my friends in the building to know they can always come by if they need something - a cup of sugar or to talk about the upcoming Shabbat plans, or dating advice, of course. Maybe it's good prep for when I eventually get married and have kids one day. I'll already be used to being the go-to for everything. Lastly, my apartment is beautiful inside. Tall ceilings, large bedrooms. Great size kitchen and living room. Hosting friends for dinner parties and drinks is always a lot of fun. But with this day and economy, everything is becoming more expensive. Rent is where basically any money I make is going. To know that rent money can be spent on bringing together more friends for more classy soirees and hosting events for non-profits that my roommates and I love, that would be a dream come true. And of course I'd love to give Chris a bigger Christmas bonus this year and buy some better, more eco-friendly light bulbs for my hallway.Read MoreReview from Apartments.com
