If you’re leasing an apartment for the first time, the process can feel overwhelming. You might find yourself asking, "What happens next?" This uncertainty can lead to various emotions and added stress.
Don’t worry! At Apartment Home Living, we’re here to help make the experience as smooth as possible. To guide you through this journey, we’ve put together a current list of what to expect and the steps to take during the leasing process.
1. The Initial Search
First up is your apartment search—the hunt for your ideal home.
Start by visiting our website, where you can explore a wide range of listings in your desired area. You can easily compare prices, view photos, take virtual tours, check floor plans, and explore amenities and local attractions. Once you narrow your choices down to about five options, it’s time to move on.
2. The Personal Visit
After selecting your top choices, check their leasing office hours and visit in person.
Meeting the management team and taking a tour will give you a firsthand look at potential homes. Remember, leasing agents are there to help—don’t hesitate to ask questions. Take notes during each tour and think about which community feels like the best fit for you.
3. The Application
Once you’ve made your final choice, it’s time to submit a rental application.
The leasing office will provide the application and any necessary forms. Be prepared with your ID, Social Security number, recent pay stubs for income verification, and details about your rental history. Many properties now use online applications, so check if that’s an option. Also, be aware that your credit history and background may be reviewed, so it’s best to be upfront about any potential issues. An application fee is often required at this stage.
After you submit your application, you’ll need to wait for the leasing office to process it. This could take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Once a decision is made, you’ll be notified. If you’re approved, it’s time for the next step!
4. The Lease Signing
"Congratulations! Your application has been approved."
This is the moment to sign your lease, bringing you one step closer to moving in. The leasing agent will guide you through the process, typically in the leasing office. The lease is a legal contract, so be sure to read through each page carefully. Don’t hesitate to take your time and ask questions about any terms you don’t understand.
You’ll receive a copy of the signed lease for your records, so ensure you’re comfortable with everything included. You may also need to pay security deposits at this point.
