The O. Henry Museum was formally the home of William Sidney Porter and museum pays homage to Porter, who used the pen-name O. Henry. He was a master of the short story and his work continues to intrigue readers today. The author's knack for surprise endings is one of the most outstanding elements of his work. Porter's former home has been painstakingly preserved for Apartment-ites and other Austin-ites to enjoy. The house was almost demolished in the 1930's but was donated to the City of Austin instead. The city moved the home to its current location at 409 East Fifth Street. It was originally located at 308 East Forth Street. Visitors can expect to find the home in period condition even though the structure has seen some renovation. In 1994, the city renovated the home, adding four replica chimneys that were lost during the 1930�??s. O. Henry's fascinating personal belongings and furniture are on display in the museum.
