When it comes to the world of art, you're never at a lack of things to explore, and apartment-ites in Baltimore looking to take in a few a paintings will themselves with quite a few options. The decision is the hard part, trying to figure out if you're in the mood for some nineteenth century paintings, Greek statuary, or the works of modern masters. The Walters Art Museum is making this decision a little easier for you, providing you with a range of artistic styles, ranging from Ancient times to the nineteenth century, in several different mediums. It's one gallery that art fans would be insane to pass up. The museum has a number of different collections to take in, each offering something unique, and the biggest problem will be trying to figure out where to begin. If you want to go chronologically, you can start at their Ancient Art showcase, featuring Egyptian sarcophagi, Persian and Mesopotamian statuary, and Greek jewelry and marble statues. Continuing in that vein will find you at the Asian art exhibit, which features Japanese weaponry and armor, Chinese metalwork and porcelain, and a brilliant collection of Cambodian statuary. If paintings are more your style, they have them from an array of different time periods, from the work of van der Goes, Varonese, Heemskerk, and other Baroque and Renaissance painters, to the 18th and 19th century works of masters like Monet, Manet and Sisley, as well as art commonly found in Medieval times. For a real treat, make sure not to pass up their collection of rare illuminated manuscripts and books, ranging from as early as 900 BC, featuring manuscripts from almost every continent. They also have a number of other exhibits that you'll just have to come and discover for yourself.
