There are certainly plenty of barbecue places, quick eat spots, burger joints and pizza stops to eat when you're a hungry Birmingham apartment-ite, but sometime you just want to pull out your best coat and tie, or your nicest black dress, and have a night on the town, taking in the best the culinary world has to offer, and not afraid of paying a little more for the benefit of it. The best place for upscale, Southern dining in Birmingham has got to be at Café Dupont. With old-fashioned Southern charm dripping from the very woodwork, Café Dupont is a testament to the days when everyone used to dress for dinner, and attention was paid to every item on the plate. The food is spectacular, the ambiance is breathtaking, and the service is above reproach, so if you're looking for a classy night out in town, this should be your top destination. The food in this restaurant is some of the best in the state, so be sure to enjoy it from beginning to end. Start with one of their delicious appetizers, like their fried oysters and okra with cayenne butter sauce, horseradish creme fraiche, and soy glaze, the poached anjou pear with organic argula, spiced pecans, Alabama goat cheese and Meyer lemon vinaigrette, roasted sugar stick gnocchi with por salut cream sauce and fried sage, or roasted pork roulade with roasted cauliflower, grilled mushrooms, caramelized onions and asparagus cream, or try their Artisan cheese plate with drunken goat, maytag blue, cypress grove sheep milk, and tobar del oso cheese, along with raspberry onions and grilled garlic crostini. The main courses get even more delicious and classy, and include stuffed Georgia quail with fried green tomato, cauliflower cream and farmer's market okra, seared Carolina red trout with crabmeat caper meuniere, fried leeks and rice pirlou, grilled black grouper straight fro the Gulf, served with organic arugula, grilled lemon vinaigrette, and a warm lady pea salad, braised beef short rib and a petit New York strip with crushed red potatoes, roasted shallots and fried red onions, or a trio of grilled lamb chop, roasted pork tenderloin, and andouille sausage with bourbon sweet potato souffle and cranberry chutney.
