Come hungry but be prepared to have your mouth water as you watch the talented chef's prepare your meal at Slightly North of Broad, a Maverick Southern Kitchens restaurant, or SNOB for short. Seafood, game, vegetarian dishes and other regional favorites are all in view at the open kitchen at this brick walled southern-style restaurant in a 19th century warehouse just north of historic Broad Street. Charleston apartment-ites can enjoy a smooth cocktail or indulge in a glass of wine from one of the many acclaimed domestic and international bottles available at the comfortable bar. The restaurant has been awarded the Restaurant of the Year award by the Charleston Post and Courier, and is included in the Nation's Restaurant News' Fine Dining Hall of Fame. With Chef Frank Lee's specialty entrees such as the Maverick Shrimp and Grits, and the most excellent charcuterie plate, eating there is described as a "spectacular experience." Each appetizer is well-prepared and it may be difficult for a Charleston apartment-ite to decide upon. The red bean soup and the selection of salads are appealing, as are the Prince Edward Island mussels, the house smoked salmon and the sautéed gnocchi. Medium plates, for the smaller appetite, include carpaccio of beef tenderloin, the Carolina quail breast and the noted charcuterie plate, an assortment of house made pates, mousses, sausage and rilletes, served with a small salad, traditional accompaniments and toast. For a main course, you can choose from roast rack of lamb, jumbo lump crab cakes, delicious grilled barbeque tuna, sautéed duck breast and other seafood and beef dishes. The outstanding Maverick beef tenderloin is served with a deviled crab cake with béarnaise green peppercorn sauce. Potato, grits and green veggies are selected side dishes, and weekly specials include prime rib Tuesdays and deviled crab stuffed flounder on Thursdays. Desserts include black bottom pie, yummy sour cream apple pie and of course, crème brulee. Lunch is served weekdays from 11:30 am to 3 pm, and dinner hours begin at 5:30 pm every night of the week. With the carefully arranged tables in the relaxed atmosphere in the antiquated building, SNOB is certainly not snobby, but has a right to be. Make a trip from your Charleston apartment tonight.
