Charlotte Overview

Want a great place to live that’s about halfway between the mountains and the ocean? Charlotte offers the perfect location in NC’s Piedmont region. It’s just a few hours west of the Atlantic Coast and a couple hours east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. And the Queen City itself has tons to offer residents! It’s got major employers in finance and other industries, breweries and restaurants, fun festivals — and so much more! It’s no surprise that Charlotte homes for rent are in high demand! Let’s go over some of the main things to expect if you’re planning a move to this central NC city!

What is the history of Charlotte?

Charlotte’s known for its modern Uptown buildings and vibe — but it has a history that stretches way back to the 1700s. In fact, that’s where Charlotte got its name from. Back in 1768, European settlers named their new town after Queen Charlotte — King George III’s wife. The city’s downtown area, known as Uptown, was built along a ridgeline and follows the old trading paths of the area’s indigenous people. Charlotte also had its own Gold Rush in the 1800s, after gold was discovered beneath the city streets! Over the years, the Queen City became a railroad town, textile city, and financial center. It’s still a thriving banking town that’s attracting tons of new residents!

How is the weather in Charlotte?

Like lots of sunshine? Charlotte gets over 200 days of sun per year! You can expect some overcast days, rainy days — and maybe even a snowy day or two in winter. Summer weather does get hot and humid, with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s. Lows during summer are often in the low 70s or upper 60s. Winter temps are usually in the 50s. But you do get the occasional cold snaps. What about fall and spring? These are the most temperate times, with highs in the 60s and 70s and lows in the 50s. That’s perfect weather for enjoying the area’s fall foliage!

How do I get around town?

Looking for Charlotte rental homes near Uptown? Or planning to find something on the outskirts of the city? Having a car makes it easier to get around Charlotte — especially if you’re not in the heart of the city. But there are a couple of public transportation options available if you don’t have a car. The LYNX Blue Line has 26 light rail stations available going north-south to and from Uptown and UNC Charlotte. That includes 11 park and ride stations. Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) also runs buses on 65 routes throughout Charlotte. Leaving the city? Charlotte Douglas International Airport on the west side of town has tons of flights daily — domestic and international! Charlotte also has Greyhound and Amtrak stations.

What is the Charlotte commute like?

Where you look for rental homes in Charlotte can affect how much time you spend commuting. Driving to and from Uptown from the suburbs? You’re looking at an average commute time of 24 minutes. But this can be longer, depending on rush hour, weather, and roadwork. I-277 forms a loop right around Uptown, with several exits available. I-77 runs north-south right through Charlotte. I-485 goes in a larger loop around Charlotte and the surrounding suburbs, like Matthews and Mint Hill. Plan your move accordingly — and don’t forget about park and ride options for avoiding traffic and Uptown parking!

Why live in Charlotte, NC?

What’s causing a strong demand for Charlotte rentals? It might have to do with the city’s cost of living — it’s slightly lower than the national average. And Charlotte has major employers in several industries, giving the city a solid job market. Banking and finance may be the main industries. But you’ll also find plenty of employers in energy, tech, manufacturing, health, and other industries. The Queen City’s location is also a big plus for people moving here. It’s a short drive from the Research Triangle — UNC Chapel Hill, NC State University, and Duke University. And it’s ideally located for coastal or mountain getaways!

What Charlotte landmarks should I see?

Charlotte’s filled with parks, public works of art, and many other things to see! Head to pocket park known as The Green in Uptown to see giant fish fountains, a huge stack of books, and other quirky artwork. Visit the Mint Museum Uptown to learn more about the city’s history and view works of art. Stroll through Old Settlers Cemetery in Fourth Ward Park, where some headstones date back to the 1700s. Are you a racing fan? Head up to Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord and the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Uptown!

What is there to do around Charlotte?

Love thrill rides? Visit Carowinds to go on roller coasters and enjoy other daring amusement park rides! Looking for water activities? Head to the US National Whitewater Center for rafting and other kinds of fun on the Catawba River. See live performances at Spectrum Center. Catch a Carolina Panthers game or two at Bank of America Stadium! Charlotte is also about 90 minutes away from the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC, and the NC Zoo in Asheboro. Spend your free time in the NoDa, South End, and Dilworth neighborhoods for festivals, nightlife, dining — and much more!

Where is the best place to move in Charlotte?

You can find homes for rent in Charlotte in just about every part of the city. But where should you focus your search? Think about your budget and what kind of area you want to be in. Love a lively neighborhood that’s close to restaurants and shops? Try Uptown Charlotte to be near the action! Looking for an area that’s quieter and filled with tree-lined streets? You’ll find that in the Myers Park neighborhood. For good schools and a suburban feel, there’s Beverly Woods and SouthPark. Interested in a historic neighborhood with older homes? Elizabeth has that — and coffee shops, bakeries, and other amenities!
