There's no denying the comforts of home, and few would argue with one's desire to hang within the confines of a new apartment. But let's face it - sometimes you just need to answer the call of the great outdoors. Trees, wildlife, running water and open air can all be found in spades at the North Park Village Nature Center, one of Chicago's most applauded preserves. Featuring over 155 acres of wetlands, forest and open plains, this is one nature center that definitely puts the emphasis on 'nature'. An educational center is housed on the grounds, providing professional advice for the curious, and the numerous trails grant hikers sweeping views of the breathtaking natural scenery. Deer are a common sight, as are squirrels and a variety of birds, and don't be surprised if you run across a party of mushroom hunters. The Center presents a variety of special events, including the always-popular maple syrup festival, although be forewarned that a veritable army of families with children tend to overtake the grounds on such high profile days. Those yearning for some quiet reflection amongst the flora are encouraged to schedule a hike on the off-season afternoons of late fall or early spring, where the silence is golden, the air is crisp, and the fireplace burns bright within the educational center's sitting room.
