C'mon, admit it...like most fans of the notorious series, at one point or another you've yearned deep down to break bread with Pauli, Christopher, Uncle Junior and, of course, the head cheese himself, Tony Soprano. The wine, the pasta, the salad...and the occasional knee breaking. Well for those in the Chicago area, Soprano's Italian Restaurant offers the ambiance, if not exactly the violent tendencies, of America's favorite fictional Mafioso family. Authentic and rustic are two terms that should accompany any Italian restaurant worth its sauce (or 'gravy'), and Soprano's more than fits the book. The pasta is, of course, homemade on premises, while the tender veal cutlets and thick steak chops are selected with the highest attention to detail. Fresh ingredients such as sun-dried tomatoes, marinated Portobello mushrooms and garlic, garlic, garlic help keep the cuisine zesty and the vampires at bay, and the Chocolate cannol cake is so rich and decadent that one half expects Chef Artie Bucco to emerge from the kitchen to present it himself. The service is attentive and professional, the martini list is second only to the selection of wine from their private cellar, and Friday and Saturday nights are highlighted by live musical renderings of the classics...meaning Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Still, despite all of the authentic flare, the only thing missing at this Soprano's is snarky attitude and over-the-top expense, ensuring that your wallet won't get whacked by a lone night on the town.
