A free look at over 43,000 works of art in a historic building contructed in 1916 should be enough to get any Cleveland apartment-ite out to see the Cleveland Museum of Art. Recent reconstruction to this beautiful edifice makes is even more exciting to view the broad collection of art at this wonderful museum. This impressive museum of art divides its collections into fifteen departments including Chinese Art, Modern European Art, African Art, Drawings, Prints, European Painting & Sculpture, Textiles & Islamic Art, American Painting & Sculpture, Greek & Roman Art, Contemporary Art, Medieval Art, Decorative Art & Design, Art of the Ancient Americas and Oceania, Photography and Contemporary Art. And my goodness, these collections represent art from many a noted artist, including Caravaggio, El Greco, Poussin, Rubens, Frans Hals, Goya, DalÃ, Matisse, Renoir, Gauguin, Church, Cole, Monet, van Gogh and Picasso. Some of the later 20th-century artists include Warhol, Pollock, Christo, Kiefer, Clemente, Kossoff, Tansey and LeWitt, and others. The objects and art of the museum was built piece by piece by the innovative and creative curatorial staff over the years, making it one of the finest collections in the world. Many museums are built starting with large bequests from individuals or organizations, and since the Gleveland Museum of Art was not started in this way, that's what makes it unique and outstanding. Special exhibitions, lectures, films and musical programs are featured on a regular basis. The department of performing arts, music and film hosts the Panorama Film Series and the VIVA! & Gala Around Town concert series, all which are an incredible infusion of internationally renowned artists into Cleveland. These events are worth checking out when you're restless in your Cleveland apartment. Home to Rodin's "The Thinker," a nude man posed with his elbow on his knee and his chin on his hand, the museum has suffered a troubled history since it was partially destroyed in a bombing in 1970. Casted in 1902, the rebuilding was not commenced due to the close involvement of the artist in its original casting. In addition, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company performs at the museum, and you may purchase tickets online at either the museum website or the dance company site, or by calling either of their telephone contacts. The wide range of hours makes it easy to take a trip from your Cleveland apartment to visit the museum. They are open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm, and Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 9 pm. The only closed holidays are New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Special exhibits will occasionally charge an admission fee, but it is well worth the price. Make it a date to see the musueum of art!
