Cleveland apartment-ites can be awakened and refreshed with a bit of outdoor activity at the Mill Stream Run Reservation. This delightful park offers hiking trails, fishing, boating, ball fields, a physical fitness test trail, picnic areas - reserved and unreserved, swimming, waterfowl and a wildlife management area. The reservation has a number of trails and picnic areas for visitors to enjoy year round, including an awesome trail up and down hills and leading to a top-notch picnic area, a Chalet with its twin toboggan chutes for winter thrills, and summer reserved picnicking and fall hayrides. The Valley Parkway Trail is an 8.5-mile trail from Bagley Road to W. 130th Street with a loop around the Bonnie Park Picnic Area. Within the trail can also be found Royalview Picnic Area, a favored sanctuary of park staff. This spot can be rented on weekends, a destination to hike or to just sit along the stonewall and gaze at the stars on a clear night. It is located just south of Royalton Rd (Rt 82) on Valley Parkway. This facility has a shelter with electricity, a baseball field and flush toilets. Groups can reserve this site to host family reunions, summer company picnics, wedding receptions, or just a get together with Cleveland apartment-ites. Enjoy the horseshoe pits, swings and meals prepared on the multiple charcoal grills. It is an escape in itself. It is well worth the trip up Royalview Lane to see the scenic view of the surrounding area. Or, you may watch the deer, squirrels or other wildlife frolic in the field just outside the shelter house. But the best sight of all can be at nightfall. On a clear night, the entire sky is illuminated with stars and the moon. There are two other picnic areas in the park that can be reserved, offering open shelter with electricity, picnic tables, grills, ball field, fishing area, hiking trail access, restrooms, parking, wildlife management area and public telephone. Early Americans inhabited much of the area around the park, using water power from the east branch of the Rocky River and its tributaries for sawmills and grist mills. Eventually, businesses such as factories, taverns, blacksmith shops and tailors followed. The settlers were not the first to visit; artifacts have been found in the reservation that indicate Native American tribes frequented this area over 8,000 years ago. The reservation includes numerous species of wildlife and plant life, including ferns and wildflowers. The Cleveland Metroparks, of which Mill Stream Run Reservation is a part, consist of over 21,000 acres of various landscapes and attractions for visitors to enjoy. The Park District is commonly referred to as the "Emerald Necklace" because the reservations encircle the city of Cleveland. And while headquarters for the sixteen reservations of Cleveland Metroparks is listed here as an address to write to the park, the actual location of the park is south of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Entrances to Mill Stream Run are off Routes 42 and 82, Albion, Handle, Lee, Prospect, Eastland, Edgerton, and Bagley Roads, South Rocky River Drive and W. 130th Street. The park maps found from the website (http://www.clemetparks.com/pdf/reservations/Mill_Stream_Run.pdf) will direct you to the various entrances and activities. Leave your Cleveland apartment behind and enjoy some of the great outdoors that the Cleveland area has to offer.
