Garden of the Gods sounds almost intimidating to the Colorado Springs apartment-ite, but not to worry, this registered national landmark park has nothing to be fearful of. This incredible rock formation park, with bright red stones bursting through the earth and surrounded by trees, brush, and thankfully, man-made trails, awaits your visit, especially since it's free to both traverse the park and go through the visitors center. At Garden of the Gods, you can enjoy such activities as nature talks with topics including geology, ecology, wildlife, and the cultural history of the park and Colorado Springs from a park expert. Naturalists will lead visitors on 30 minute walks through the park, and present fascinating facts and lore regarding wildflowers, gold-seekers, rattlesnakes and other Colorado-themed topics. Two gorgeous picnic areas are provided with plenty of tables, and have charcoal burning barbecue pits for Colorado Springs apartment dwellers who want to get out in the open for an outdoor event. Rock climbers are welcome, with a few restrictions, horseback riding and cycling is encouraged as well. See the park website for details. To have the visit of a lifetime at this beautiful park, you must check out the Garden of the Gods movie before your tour. Presented on a huge 23 ft. screen at the visitor center, the movie vividly displays the historic, geographic and geological story of the park. This theater presentation combines High Definition technology, theatrical lighting, and a surround sound audio to bring the story of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region to life, and accounts for the natural evolution of the area and the people that have lived here. The cost to see the movie is just $5 for adults and $2 per child. It runs every 20 minutes. The long open hours at the park make it easy for you to leave from your job or Colorado Springs apartment to visit and stay and watch either the sunset or to do some star gazing. From May 1st to October 31st, the hours are 5 am to 11 pm, and from November 1st to April 30th, the park is open 5 am to 9 pm. For the early riser, you can go watch a sunrise or see the night critters settle in after their nighttime activities too. The visitor center is open 8 am to 8 pm Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and 9 am to 5 pm during the fall through the spring.
