It's important for Detroit apartment-ites to remember that art isn't just the old works of folks like Rembrandt and Picasso, but instead is made up of pieces from several different times and places. The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit specializes in new and emerging artists, with unique styles and original production styles, using all kinds of mediums for their productions. You won't find a museum quite like it anywhere else in town, and once you walk through the doors, you will never want to leave. Opened in 2006 with the intention of bringing contemporary artists to the forefront, today's exhibitions carry on the original spirit, capturing captivatingly creative works by some talented newcomers to the game. These artists use a number of different mediums, traditional methods such as paints, sculpture and photography, as well as more unique approaches, including video, found objects and even clothing. The art here is quite different than just about anything you'll find anywhere else, with splashes of color, unique designs and the most unusual items that you would never consider could be made into a sculpture being put together for truly provocative pieces. The bizarre nature of many of the works may turn off those who are more used to traditional painting styles of a Van Gogh or a Matisse, but for those looking for something a bit different, there's nothing better. In addition to their exhibits, the museum is also home to a number of other events throughout the year. Holiday parties, benefits and fundraisers add an element of fun to the proceedings, and you can even catch showings of avant garde films if you come on the right nights. There are also lectures from artists, both new and established, throughout the year, so pop in and you might be able to hear one of the creators of the museum's collection talking about his work. This is not your grandma's art museum. It's new, different, and fresh, ,and apartment-ite art fans should not pass up this chance to take in some of the best the Detroit art world has to offer.
