What is the history of Folsom?
The area that would become Folsom played a key role during the California Gold Rush during the mid 1850s. A group of African-American 49ers were among the first to create a mining camp here. This settlement would eventually grow into the city of Folsom. The city was named after Capt. Joseph Libbey Folsom, who arrived in California with the 1st Regiment of New York Volunteers in 1847. Folsom eventually purchased a 35,000-acre land grant and hired a surveyor to lay out a town that he dubbed Granite City. After Folsom died in 1855, his executors changed the name of the town to Folsom. Plenty of history has taken place in Folsom since. The town was one of the end points of the first railroad in the west, one that ran 22 miles from Sacramento to Folsom and made its first run in 1856. Folsom is also the site of the world's first long-distance transmission of electricity. This happened at the Folsom Powerhouse in 1895, with the transmission covering the 22 miles from Folsom to Sacramento. It wasn't until the local Chamber of Commerce launched a campaign to turn Folsom into a city that it was finally incorporated in 1946. The vote? It came in at 285 in favor of incorporation and 168 in opposition.
