The City of Los Angeles, popularly known by its initials L.A., is the most populous city in the state of California, United States. It was founded after 44 villagers from the Mexican provinces of Sinaloa and Sonora came to live in what is now Downtown Los Angeles. Two of these settlers were Spaniards while the others comprised of Blacks, Indians, and Mestizos of diverse ancestry. The town was named El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porcincula, meaning “Our Lady the Queen of the angels of Porcincula”. L.A. became part of United States in 1847 after being captured by US forces. At first, there were a handful of families in the town but the discovery of oil in 1892 massively fueled the growth of the city.

How is the weather in Los Angeles?

Southern California’s climate is often referred to as the “perfect climate” for a good reason. Los Angeles city experiences a Subtropical-Mediterranean climate that gives it many sunny days with warmth and gentle breezes especially in the summer. The humidity of the city is low and there is relatively little or no rain. In Spring, you can expect to find averagely high temperatures that linger in the comfortable mid 70s but with no summer’s overwhelming smog and winter’s prevalent rain. In summer, you can expect an almost dry and warm season with average high temperatures that range in the mid 80s. The autumn temperatures average in the high 70s and low 80s.Winters are mild with average temperatures on the upper 60s, which is definitely better than the freezing cold experienced in other major U.S. cities such as New York.

How do I get around town?

The city of Los Angeles as well as the rest of its metropolitan area have an extensive network of highways and freeways, with some of the major highways connecting the city being Interstate 5, Interstate 10 and the U.S. Route 101.The public transportation networks here are among the best in the country and include subways, light rail, buses, and shuttles that can take you to virtually any corner of the city. Rail systems include the Purple and Red subway lines plus the Blue, Gold, Expo, and Green light rail lines. The main domestic and international airport serving Los Angeles is the Los Angeles International Airport, commonly known by its airport code, LAX.

What is the Los Angeles commute like?

Some of the major highways serving Los Angeles include, Interstate 405, Interstate 10 and U.S. Route 101. Interstate 105, also known as the San Diego Freeway, is the main north and south freeway for Western L.A. It is the most commonly used highway to LAX and is also a bypass for Interstate 5. Interstate 10, also known as the Santa Monica/San Bernadino Freeway, is the main east and west freeway connecting Downtown L.A. to Santa Monica. It travels from east L.A through Phoenix, Houston, New Orleans, and to Jacksonville, Florida. U.S Route 101, also called the Hollywood/Ventura Freeway, is the major north-south route that connects L.A. to Central Coast, San Francisco Bay area, and the North Coast. However, traffic is still of major concern in L.A. as the city’s drivers spent an average of 81 hours idling on the freeways in 2015.

The L.A. population is served by different types of media including, news stations, newspapers, radio stations and internet radio stations. The major daily newspaper serving the city and its neighborhoods is the Los Angeles Times. There is also the ‘La Opinion’, which serves as the city’s major Spanish language newspaper.
