Louisville Overview
Looking for a city with great schools? Fortune 500 companies? Lots to see and do? Louisville offers all of these — and so much more! This northern Kentucky city sits right on the Indiana border along the Ohio River. It’s not far from several day trip destinations, including Nashville, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati. And it has plenty of attractions, events, and amenities of its own for enjoyable day-to-day living! It’s no wonder that demand for Louisville homes for rent is on the rise. We’ll walk you through what it’s like to live here — and explore what makes it a great place to call home!
What is the history of Louisville?
The city’s history dates back to 1778, when George Rogers Clark founded it. Louisville gets its name from the French King Louis XVI — thanks to the help he provided in the Revolutionary War. The city took awhile to start growing. But the steamboat’s invention during the early 19th century helped it thrive! In fact, Louisville became Kentucky’s biggest city — and a large industrial center — by 1830 due to steamboats bringing trade along the river. Railroad construction brought even more industrial success to Louisville during the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. In recent years, the city has experienced population growth thanks to its job opportunities, affordable cost of living — and many other advantages!
How is the weather in Louisville?
It’s mainly on the warmer side — but it does get a bit of snow most winters. Louisville summers have highs in the upper 80s with high humidity levels that can make it feel even hotter. Lows in summer are usually in the upper 60s and low 70s. Winter highs tend to be in the 40s, with a slight chance of snow on colder days. Lows in winter are typically in the upper 20s and low 30s. Spring and fall weather is pleasant, with highs in the 60s and 70s and lows in the 50s and 40s. Louisville gets a few inches of rain on average per month. But it also has a lot of clear, sunny days!
How do I get around town?
Looking for Louisville rental homes on the outskirts of the city — or closer to the center? The downtown area is walkable. And you’ll also find scooters to rent if you don’t feel like walking. Transit Authority of River City operates several public buses throughout Louisville, including a rapid transit route along Route 10 every 15 minutes during the week. But if you plan to live farther away from downtown, you may be better off having a car. What if you need to travel? The Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport — just south of downtown — has flights available within and outside the U.S. There’s also a Greyhound bus station in downtown not far from the river.
What is the Louisville commute like?
You can expect an average commute time of 22 minutes. That can end up being shorter or longer, depending on where you’re looking at homes for rent in Louisville. Homes closer to major roads might help you cut down on your commute time a bit. Going to and from the outer suburbs and downtown may be on the longer side — especially if you drive during rush hour. Louisville has a few major roadways. I-265 loops around the city. I-65 passes through central Louisville from north to south. I-64 runs through the city from west to east. And I-71 passes through the northeastern part of the city. Just be aware that I-71, I-65, and I-64 are known for getting bottlenecked!
Why live in Louisville, KY?
What’s behind the rising demand for rental homes in Louisville? It could be that the city offers great job opportunities. Several major employers, including Kroger and Humana, have headquarters here. Louisville also has good schools at all levels — from elementary schools to higher education, like the University of Louisville. The city’s also close to parks and forests for hiking and other outdoor recreation, including Charleston State Park and Jefferson Memorial Forest. And it’s got a lively downtown area, scenic views of the river, and the Louisville Sluggers. It’s also home to the world-famous Kentucky Derby!
What Louisville landmarks should I see?
The city has several of them! Visit the Actors Theatre in the Bank of Louisville Building that dates back to 1837. Take a ride on the oldest operating steamboat in the U.S. aboard the Belle of Louisville — built in 1914! Visit the Kentucky Derby Museum to see the Churchill Downs’ Twin Spires, dating back to 1895. Head to Locust Grove to tour a Georgian mansion from the late 1700s. Stroll by the boyhood home of our 12th president, Zachary Taylor. Visit the WaterWorks Museum to see a pumping station and water tower built in 1860.
What is there to do around Louisville?

But some of the top things to do include visiting the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory if you’re a baseball fan. If you like bourbon, check out the Urban Bourbon Experience. You get to visit more than 35 restaurants and bars offering this famous Kentucky whiskey! The city also has tons of events in all seasons. There’s the Louisville International Festival of Film Lights Under Louisville, and the Kentucky State Fair — to name just a few!
