Indie movie theaters - as in, movie theaters showing actual, art-house indie movies that no-one ever hears about - are really hard to find anywhere. Most indie-loving apartment-ites will find themselves having to just traipse down to the video store and bringing back Vincent Gallo's latest Ebert-hated offering to their apartment. So for an indie movie fix in an indie movie-type bohemian setting, like-minded apartment-ites can head down to Miami Beach Cinemathique to see independent films from Chicago to Columbia. The theater is located on South Beach the Art Deco district, and the interior also boasts a library, a bookstore and a café, which serves all types of food and café fare, including vegan baked goods. The movie showtimes are written on a chalkboard, which helps to give off a suitably lo-fi indie vibe. Moviegoing there feels like more of a quaint, old-fashioned experience, as the decor is 1920s Mediterranean Revival, having been converted from a hotel from the Art Deco period. The staff are pretty knowledgeable about the movies they show, and service there is very courteous. The only negative aspect are the "cozy" chairs. They're a little cramped, as the majority of them are director's-type chairs, instead of the more comfy couches or armchairs you tend to expect from cafés. Aside from this gripe, there's nothing to stop you from having a good, cultured night out here.
