Smack dab in the center of town is Bienville Square, a lovely get-away park for downtown workers who live in Mobile apartments. The name implies exactly what it is, a one acre square bordered by Dauphin, St. Joseph, St. Francis and North Conception. Residents of Bienville Square apartments have plenty of park benches here to read a book, the newspaper or just people watch. The open space even allows for a game of Frisbee, a picnic or a nap on a blanket. It's the perfect downtown park that also hosts several events throughout the year. This historic location has a record as far back as 1824 when the US Congress designated that this space be forever held as a city park. That's dedication from the government to have this location for Mobile apartment dwellers for their entire lifetime. Since the 1800's, trees have been pulled and planted, fences went up and came down, famous people have spoken here, and fountains and bandstands constructed. When you visit the park from your Bienville Square apartment, be sure to think about this history. The official Mobile Christmas tree is set up in Bienville Square each year and a lighting ceremony brings on the holiday spirit. Also found in the park during the year is the Jazz in Bienville celebration, and it is the epicenter for Mobile's Bayfest Music Festival. The quaintness of the park makes it a nice setting for each event, with enough room for people who live in Bienville Square apartments to get around easily.
