Montréal Overview
Stunning cosmopolitan Montréal – European culture on a North American waterfront. On an island dividing the Saint Lawrence River is the sparkling vision of Montréal Québec, the province’s largest city and Canada’s second largest. It’s named after Mont Royal, the volcanic 3-peaked mountain that makes the island. The exquisite city is French Canadian with a distinctive European atmosphere. French is the primary language of Québec. Many people in Montréal speak English, but very few do in rural areas farther from the city. Montréal is a leading financial, manufacturing, and academic center of Canada. It is a major employment and transportation hub. But it’s best known for its friendly people, affordable rental housing, abundant fun nightlife, many delectable dining options, and its vibrant art, music, and theater scene.
What is the history of Montréal?
A humble little river island settlement becomes a great glimmering city rising from the water. The charming boroughs of Montréal began as independent towns and today retain features of their original French colonial development. French missionaries set up a colony on the island in 1642. Later, fur trading became a prominent economic activity at the settlement. In 1760, the British military took control of Montréal, and in 1763, the area was officially claimed as a part of the British Empire. The city’s location on the river made it a natural choice for the development of transportation and manufacturing. Montréal served as Canada’s capital in the mid-1840s. The city continued to grow and the disparate local towns on the island assimilated to form the thriving modern international city of Montréal.
How is the weather in Montréal?
The St. Lawrence River climate delivers every seasonal option for Montréal residents. Life in Montréal, Québec is in the northern version of the North American four seasons. Winters are cold, windy, extra snowy, and occasionally icy. Average January temperatures in Montréal are an average high of just 25°F (-3.9°C) and low of 11° (-11.7°C). The seasonal reward for that is the average July high temperature, which is 80°F (64°C) and a low of 64°F (17.8°C). Summers can be in the mid-80s F (30°s C) and humid. But, cool fronts often bring drying breezes and beautiful weather. Fall and spring weather is mild, but extreme changes in atmospheric conditions can occur, like heat waves, storms, and unseasonal snow. Montréal receives around 32 inches of rain (818 mm) and 85.5 inches of snow (217 cm) per year.
How do I get around town?
Getting around Montréal is so seamless that it’s part of the fun of being in the city. Montréal provides a whole system of combined creative and affordable public transportation alternatives to driving a car. First, it is an exceptionally walkable city. It also features BIXI public bikes for getting around the metro area. The Montréal Metro — a network of rubber-tired subway cars on tracks is a comfortable option. Buses are also cheap and handy, and they service areas not reached by Metro. Exo train lines run through metropolitan Montréal and connect with Amtrak for travel through greater Canada. Altogether, it’s actually easier to get around the island by these means than by driving your own car. That’s because gas prices are high, nearby parking can be too hard to find, and there’s time spent sitting in congested traffic. Montréal’s underground city, called RÉSO, is a network of pleasant corridors accessing office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, museums, performance venues, convention spaces, even universities, the Metro, and the central train station.
What is the Montréal commute like?
Close your eyes and put your finger on the map. Any major Montréal route offers a great trip. Main roadways servicing Montréal include Route 40, which traverses the center of the island from north to south, becoming Route 520 south of Royal Mount. Route 136 runs north and south from downtown to the northernmost bridge leading to smaller islands on the river. Going south, it merges with Rue Notre Dame, leads on to Bd Saint Joseph, winds around the coastline and ultimately over the bridge to islands south of Montréal. A-19 west crosses the river to Laval and crosses it on the east side to Longueuil. Hwy 40 leads from Montréal north along the river to Québec City (260 km/162 mi). ON-401 runs from Montréal to Toronto, Ontario (542 km / 347 miles). Route 20 from downtown Montréal leads to Hwy 417 to Ottawa (208 km/129 miles). Montréal to Champlain, NY, USA on Hwy A-15 is about 74 km/ 46 mi). For roadway information or help, call Québec 511.
