Raleigh Overview
Streets lined with towering oaks, tons of festivals and events, and great job and educational opportunities make Raleigh a top NC city for renters. Planning a move to the City of Oaks? You’ll be just a few hours away from the ocean to the east and the mountains to the west! But the city itself also has a lot to enjoy. The NC State Fair and other fun events take place here each year. Raleigh’s also part of the Research Triangle, making it a good home for students or anyone who works in higher education. Check out more about why rental homes in Raleigh are in growing demand!
What is the history of Raleigh?
Did you know that Raleigh was built specifically to be NC’s capital city? Way back in 1792, the state created the city as a permanent place for NC government. Named for Sir Walter Raleigh, the city slowly developed in the following years. It grew into a major retail center by the late 1800s, with lots of shopping and special events, like parades and vaudeville. How did it become known for higher education? That started during the mid-1800s. Raleigh was the site of several colleges at this time. But NC State University’s establishment in the late 1800s made it a prime educational center in the state. That reputation continues to attract more and more residents to this day!
How is the weather in Raleigh?
Raleigh’s north enough to get all four seasons. But it’s also south enough to barely get any snow or ice. You’ll get to enjoy beautiful fall foliage and colorful spring flowers! Temps during these seasons are pleasant and mild, with highs in the 60s and 70s. How hot does summer get? Summers can be scorching. Highs are usually in the upper 80s. But humidity can make it feel a bit hotter. With most Raleigh rentals having central air, you can easily escape the heat! Winter temps are typically in the 50s, with some lows in the 30s. Raleigh does get a few inches of rain each month mixed with plenty of sunny days.
How do I get around town?
Having a car gives you an easy way to go wherever you need to around the city. I-40, I-440, I-540, and US-1 are some of the major roads in the area. But public transportation is also an option. There’s GoRaleigh bus service throughout the downtown area. Or you can take the free, eco-friendly R-Line buses, which run in loops around the central part of Raleigh. Attending classes at NC State University? Then you can take Wolfline bus service to get around. The city also has a bikeshare program available. Traveling out of town? Raleigh-Durham International Airport operates multiple flights to destinations within the U.S. and other countries.
What is the Raleigh commute like?
You’ll spend around 23 minutes or so commuting via car. Of course, this can easily vary, depending on what part of the city you live in, where you work, and what roads you take. Morning rush hour falls between 7:30 and 9, while evening rush hour is from 4:30 to 6:30. Which roads are most likely to have tons of traffic? Any of the major roads can make your commute longer. But Glenwood Avenue and I-440 are a couple that tend to be backed up, especially after accidents. Look for Raleigh homes for rent close to your job if you want to cut down on commute times.
