Rapid City Overview

Thinking of searching for Rapid City rental homes? This western South Dakota city offers a great mix of culture and canyons, along with good job opportunities and affordable living! Being a resident here also means you’re just minutes away from Black Hills National Forest, Mount Rushmore, and Badlands National Park for outdoor adventures. Or you can explore the downtown area for dining, shopping, museums, and other amenities. Rapid City also hosts several fun events in every season, like the Mountain West Whiskey Festival in March and the West Summer Boulevard Festival each June. We’ll go over other reasons to move here — and what to expect as a Rapid City resident!

What is the history of Rapid City?

Rapid City didn’t get its name for being a fast-paced place. Instead, founders and would-be gold miners Samuel Scott and John Brennan named it after Rapid Creek that flows through town. Scott and Brennan came to the area searching for gold in the Black Hills. They didn’t succeed. But they did build Rapid City, starting with six blocks that became one of the biggest cities in the state. Over the years, Rapid City served as a transportation hub for wagons, trains — and eventually, cars. Today, it’s a lively city that’s seeing a growing population thanks to its attractions, amenities, and scenic surroundings between the mountains and plains.

How is the weather in Rapid City?

You get all four seasons here, with summer highs climbing to the upper 80s. Lows during the summer months cool down to the 50s. Rainy weather this time of year also helps keep the area feeling cooler. Winter in Rapid City brings daytime temps in the upper 30s, with nighttime temps plummeting to the teens! The city also gets about 26 inches of snow per year — mainly between November through April. What are fall and spring like? You can expect highs in the 50s and 60s and lows in the 30s and 40s during these seasons, making it a bit chilly for daytime hikes to see spring flowers and fall foliage.

How do I get around town?

Are you planning to drive a car around or depend on public transportation? You’ll need a car to get around the outer areas of the city and the region in general. The local Rapid Transit System runs six buses along a handful of fixed routes, mainly in the central parts of the city. This limited transportation can make it harder to get around — so plan accordingly when looking for Rapid City homes for rent. Need to get out of town? There’s a Greyhound bus station in the downtown area. For flights in and out of the area, there’s Rapid City Regional Airport, located roughly 10 miles east of the city center.

What is the Rapid City commute like?

How much time will you spend driving your car or riding a bus to and from work as a Rapid City resident? The average time for commuting is just 21 minutes — that’s lower than the U.S. average. Several roads provide convenient routes through town and to surrounding towns. I-90 runs east-west through the northern part of town, while I-190 runs north-south in the city center. US Route 16 runs north-south in the city center. SD Highway 44 runs east-west through the middle part of town, while SD Highway 79 goes north-south in the eastern part of town. Searching for homes for rent in Rapid City close to any of these roads may help reduce commute times for you.

Why live in Rapid City, SD?

Rapid City rentals are in demand for lots of reasons. In fact, the city’s been listed among the top places to rent in the entire U.S.! An affordable cost of living means you can look forward to getting more for your money here — especially compared to other Great Plains cities and towns. Major employers in healthcare, finance, engineering, IT, and other fields also provide great job opportunities for Rapid City residents. A downtown area with cultural attractions, shops, and restaurants, and a convenient location next the Black Hills make the city an incredible place to call home!

What Rapid City landmarks should I see?

Rapid City might be known for being close to Mount Rushmore and national parks. But you don’t have to go far to see landmarks. The City of Presidents is right in the heart of the city! Stroll past these bronze statues to learn more about presidents past and present. Iconic landmarks are just a short drive from the city, including Crazy Horse Memorial and Custer State Park. There’s also Devils Tower National Monument and Minutemen Missile National Historic Site, located within a couple hours of Rapid City.

What is there to do around Rapid City?

Kids of all ages can roam through Dinosaur Park to see dino statues — and enjoy stunning views of the city! Visit Dahl Arts Center’s art galleries to see paintings and other works from regional and local artists. Head to Main Street Square to go ice skating in winter, or let the kids cool off in the water fountain during summer. The downtown area’s also filled with dining and shopping options, including antique stores and quaint boutique shops!

Where is the best place to move in Rapid City?

The ideal neighborhood to look for rental homes in Rapid City depends on how close you want to be to downtown’s amenities or the outer areas for rugged surroundings. West Rapid City gives you homes that are conveniently close to downtown — while also being a short drive from the Black Hills and other outdoor attractions. Downtown itself means that you’ll have eateries and shops within walking distance from your doorstep! Ashland Heights and Northeast Rapid City offer a more rural setting away from the heart of town with newer homes.
