It’s a sleepy New England town with old world character located on the outskirts of the major metropolitan city of Boston. Salem apartment renters can relax in the pleasant, low-crime town while working and playing in a big city. It is also surrounded by vast natural resources that include mountain ranges and national parks. Apartments in Salem can be relatively inexpensive, especially when you consider the quality of life residents enjoy.

What is the history of Salem?

Salem was settled in the mid-17th Century as a northern Massachusetts’ parish until the boundary line was altered in 1741. It was then renamed Salem when it joined New Hampshire. The quaint New England town grew in prominence at the turn of the 20th Century when Canobie Lake Park became a leading leisure destination driven by trolley service

Salem is also a winter wonderland that averages several feet of snow annually.

How do I get around town?

Like many New England towns, Salem residents like their cars. However, the Cooperative Alliance for Transportation (CART) system was established 10 years ago. It provides curb-to-curb rides for very low fares. It’s basically Salem’s answer to public transportation and has been well received by the community. The town also benefits from rail and bus services linked to the greater Boston area.

What is the Salem commute like?

More than 95 percent of the people in Salem rely on cars for their commute to work. Most drive alone but about seven percent carpool. Less than one percent walk to work. The average commute time is about 25 minutes, depending on whether you travel from the south using I-93 or from the north on Zion Hill Road. Traffic is generally light regardless.

What are the local media outlets?

A primary source of print and online news for the area is the Salem Observer. Because Salem is a border town with Massachusetts and falls with the signal range of major Boston radio stations, its airwaves enjoy the full complement of big city programming from NPR to Top-40 to talk news programming.

Why live in Salem, NH?

Salem is a tremendous place for apartment renters because it has a best of both worlds lifestyle. Any annual festivals or Salem events to know?

New Hampshire is famous for Laconia Motorcycle Week every June and the gathering showcases some exotic two-wheelers and a week-long party. Film Festival, New England Brewfest and the Hillsborough Balloon Fest to name a few. They are all a short drive away.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

One of the wonderful aspects of Salem apartments is the easily accessible opportunities for road trips. Boston is just a 45-minute ride or you can take a quick train into the city. Cape Cod is only three hours away and historic Newport, Rhode Island, and its Tall Ships are just a two-hour drive as well.

Where is the best place to move in Salem?

Salem has a relatively central New England location that lends itself to weekend excursions such as hiking the White Mountains to the north or day-tripping to a trendy small city like Portland. If you’re looking for convenience, Salem apartments in the neighborhoods along Route 28 have a lot to offer. There are numerous shops and restaurants and the rents are considered relatively inexpensive. The northern area of Salem is a little quieter, slightly more expensive but there are fewer apartments.
