San Antonio Overview

San Antonio, Texas is the seventh largest city in the country, but it doesn’t feel that way. Described as a big city without the big city feel, San Antonio has something that will appeal to everyone. Whether you are a student who loves the art scene, a young professional who loves the night life, or a mom or dad who loves history, you’ll fall in love with this unique city. You’ll quickly find that San Antonio has much, much more to offer than just the Alamo and Tex-Mex food.

What is the history of San Antonio?

San Antonio was named for Saint Anthony of Padua by Spanish missionaries who came upon the river and the San Antonio area on June 13, the feast day of St Anthony, in 1691. They named the river and the place in his honor. At the time, the land around the river was inhabited by the Payaya Indians who called the area Yanaguana, which means “refreshing waters.” It wasn’t until 1709 that the Spanish began to settle there. San Antonio grew to be the largest Spanish settlement in Texas, it was designated the Spanish (and later, Mexican) capital of the province of Tejas. Ultimately, Texas joined the U.S. in 1845, though the borders were still disputed by Mexico. These border disputes led to the Mexican-American war, which the U.S. won.

How is the weather in San Antonio?

San Antonio has a warm and humid climate with hot summers and no dry season. The warm season, from May until September, has an average high temperature of 88°, with about eight days a year when the temperature reaches more than 100°. The cold season is from the end of November through mid-February. The average high temperature is under 68°, with some days getting as cold as freezing. San Antonio has an average of 32 inches of rain each year, but doesn’t see any snow. The city is prone to high humidity, making it uncomfortable for those not used to it in the summer.

How do I get around town?

San Antonio is best navigated by car, especially if you plan to see the sites. However, if you plan to explore the downtown area, going by foot is your best bet, the narrow downtown streets are hard to negotiate and parking can be difficult to find. You can use the city’s bus system in downtown though, if lots of walking isn’t your thing. You can also ride San Antonio’s streetcar which runs to several tourist attractions including the River Walk and the Alamo. The San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is located about 10 miles north of the city’s center, and that’s pretty much the only place you will be able to find a taxi. Using a taxi service is an expensive alternative to using your own car, and they are not readily available in areas other than the airport.

What is the San Antonio commute like?

The San Antonio freeway system is one of the best in the country. There are several major highways – I-10, I-35, I-410, and I-37 – that make it very easy to travel around and through the center of the city. Traffic isn’t really a problem for San Antonians, it’s far better than other cities of the same size. The average commute for workers in San Antonio is 23 minutes, which isn’t bad.

What are the local media outlets?

San Antonio has about 50 radio stations, and is home to Clear Channel Communications, the largest operator of radio stations in the nation. Popular radio stations include KISS-FM 99.5 (rock music), KXXM-FM 96.1 (Top 40 music), and KRPT-FM 92.5 (conservative talk radio). The San Antonio Express-News has been the newspaper for San Antonio since 1865.

It’s a quick sight-seeing spot, the whole thing takes about 30 minutes to explore. The San Antonio River Walk is the number one destination for tourists in San Antonio. It is a public park along the river that is lined with shops, restaurants, hotels and other attractions.

The Natural Bridge Caverns is an exciting and scenic natural attraction. The caverns offer several different tours that take you deep into the caves, for fun family adventures. San Antonio is home to over 100,000 students enrolled in its 31 colleges and universities. Public schools include the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M University – San Antonio, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the Alamo Community College District.

What is there to do around San Antonio?

Besides the Alamo, River Walk, and Natural Bridge Caverns, there are lots of exciting things to do. Just some of those things include:

You can see, there is never a lack of things to do in San Antonio. In addition to those listed above, there are other attractions to visit including: various historical missions, several museums of art, breweries and bars, restaurants with everything from fast food to fine-dining.

Any annual festivals or San Antonio events to know?

Fiesta San Antonio has been held each year in late April for almost 120 years, and it’s still going strong. The festival began to celebrate the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Today, the fiesta is one of the largest festivals in the country with more than 3.5 million visitors each year. Attractions include food, musical genres, the arts, athletic events, parades, parties and more. The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo takes place in mid-February and is the destination for over a million rodeo fans each year. The event hosts typical and unusual rodeo events. The Texas Folklife Festival is a three-day festival in June that celebrates being a Texan. The festival includes traditional Texan food, music, dance and artisanship.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

There are plenty of places to vacation that are near San Antonio and an easy drive to get out for adventure out of the apartment. The city of Austin, the “live music capital of the world,” is less than two hours from San Antonio, and it provides a different kind of night life and eclectic activities. The other two cities that make up the “Texas Triangle,” Houston and Dallas are each about a four-hour drive from San Antonio, and the Gulf of Mexico is a quick 140 miles.
