Enjoy eating Mexican food at its best at Casa de Reyes, in the Plaza del Pasado, Old Town San Diego State Historic Site. It's best here for many reasons - al fresco dining in the open air courtyard with shade umbrellas, the excellent authentic Mexican dishes served, and the animated mariachi's wandering from table to table. The extensive menu offers many delicious choices - many more than the taco stand down the street from your apartment. The old-timey looking, eight page menu displays early Mexican and cowboy art depicting the time of this historic site's 1821-1872 time frame. It starts off with the typical antojitos - appetizers - such as nachos, taquitos and shrimp ceviche. Soups and salads are available as well, including a tremendous taco salad and a delicious soup called Tradicional de Albondigas with meatballs, squash, potatoes, carrots, onions and tomatoes, cumin and oregano. Tacos are called "the ultimate fun food" on their menu, as they are a finger food that can be stuffed with a variety of flavors. Carne Asada, chicken, beef, pork or fish tacos are offered, and served with rice and beans. Their enchiladas are awesome, filled with cheese, chicken, beef or pork. Burritos and fajitas are other favorites, with a combination plate of two meats for the fajitas - beef and shrimp - as my personal pick. And of course the combinación platos include some or all of the above for a tasting of several of the options. If you enjoy tasting tequila, join family and friends every second Friday for the tequila tasting a Casa de Reyes. Three tequilas are offered by the tequila ambassador along with appropriate appetizers, with cost varying each month. Casa de Reyes is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the average plate priced at about $12. Casa de Reyes was named for its close proximity to one of San Diego's earliest homeowners, Dona Maria de los Reyes Ybanez de Dominguez. The Mexican government gave away millions of acres to prominent Mexicans in the 1860's once Mexico had gained independence from Spain. The Reyes home may have been built on one of the huge cattle ranches, or ranchos, during that period. Decorations around the restaurant such as furnishings, clothing and lighting reflect this time. After your meal, explore the shops and displays of Old Town San Diego. If your apartment in San Diego is near a Metropolitan Transit System station, Plaza del Pasado is on a route to get you there.
