Part of the appeal of apartment living in the Tampa Bay area is the close proximity to the water. And with the sea, comes all of the aquatic life one can handle - from sharks and mermaids to those most popular of all oceanic exports - pirates! For land-lovers looking to experience a walking of the plank for an evening, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more scallywag-friendly pub than Gaspar's Grotto. A long-standing Florida institution among grog enthusiasts (their yearly Beer Olympics, where teams compete to down the most frothy suds, has become the stuff of local legend), Gaspar's insists it's a pirate's life for them. From the gruff captain that greets customer/invaders at the door, to the gigantic fish-filled aquarium backing the hand-carved wooden bar, everything at this Grotto is designed with the sea-faring stranger in mind. During peak summertime hours the Fiddler's Green patio area fills up with both salty dogs as well as the non-salty variety, as the notoriously pet friendly Grotto packs to the walls with revelers and their four-legged friends. Drinks specials are a treasure unto themselves (beer and a shot for $2?!), while the surprisingly diverse menu offers up such delectable hunger booty as crab enchiladas, Cuban sandwiches, sweet plantains and Spanish bean soup. Toss in some cool live music and fittingly hot bartenders, and you've got a destination worth X-ing the spot on.
