Tarzana Overview

Tarzana is a picturesque neighborhood within the Los Angeles metro. Nestled in the San Fernando Valley about equal distance from Thousand Oaks and Glendale, Tarzana offers the perfect mix of urban amenities and the tranquility of natural surroundings. Tarzana is named after the area’s founder, Edgar Rice Burroughs, writer and creator of the fictional jungle hero Tarzan. Tarzana is unique in that it represents some of the most concentrated wealth in the country and several celebrities make their homes there. At the same, time, there are plenty of Tarzana apartments, duplexes and other more affordable housing options. The community is just minutes away from popular outdoor recreational areas, with easy access to several lakes, trails and parks, including Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park, prized for its striking views and spectacular trails. Tarzana residents also enjoy a plethora of urban amenities, from coffee shops and restaurants to shopping and nightlife. Many establishments dot Ventura Boulevard, the area’s primary commercial thoroughfare. Commuters and travelers can enjoy easy access to both Interstate 405 and the Ventura Freeway.

What is the history of Tarzana?

The area where Tarzana is now located was originally a row crop farm. In 1797, Spanish settlers and missionaries established the San Fernando Mission after acquiring the land through a trade deal. Visitors to the area were sparse, other than a few missionaries and travelers along what would eventually become Ventura Boulevard. The area became a part of Mexico after it gained independence from Spain, but was later surrendered to the U.S. in 1848, following the Mexican-American War. After being used by ranchers for cattle grazing, various large tracts were purchased by investors, including General Harrison Gray Otis, publisher of the Los Angeles Times and a very active developer of the Valley. In 1919, much of the land was sold to Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the popular Tarzan novels, who established Tarzana Ranch. Burroughs later subdivided and sold off the land for residential development. Tarzana’s name was selected when residents petitioned for a post office, which was established in 1930.

How is the weather in Tarzana?

Tarzana has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with a wider range of daily highs and lows in temperature than more coastal sections of the Los Angeles metro. Tarzana’s warmest high temperatures occur in July, August and September, with average high temperatures stretching to 93, 95 and 90 degrees F, respectively. The lowest temperatures typically occur in December and January, when lows fall to an average of 41 degrees F. Tarzana receives 17.76 inches of precipitation per year on average.

How do I get around town?

Like many suburban communities, most Tarzana residents rely on private vehicles to get from place to place. The northern half of Tarzana, which is relatively flat and features many of the area’s attractions, smaller homes and apartments in Tarzana, can be traversed by bike or on foot. The southern half, however, is hillier and better traveled by car. The neighborhood is also served by LA Metro, as well as taxi and rideshare companies.

What is the Tarzana commute like?

The good news is that, unlike many areas of Los Angeles, Tarzana residents don’t experience much traffic congestion. The community’s primary artery, Ventura Boulevard, can get busy during peak business hours, however. U.S. Hwy 101, also known as the Ventura Freeway, dissects the northern part of the community, offering easy access to the rest of Los Angeles. The commute to Downtown Los Angeles can take anywhere from 55 minutes to 2 hours, depending on time of day. Commuters and travelers also enjoy easy access to Interstate 405 via the Ventura Freeway. For those preferring public transit, LA Metro has a number of stops located throughout the neighborhood.

What are the local media outlets?

As the second-largest media market in North America, the Los Angeles metro area is home to about 100 radio stations and dozens of television stations serving Tarzana. Los Angeles is a major global center for entertainment and media. Many of the country’s largest media conglomerates are headquartered there or maintain west coast offices in Los Angeles. There are also about 20 daily newspapers, including one of the nation’s largest—Los Angeles Times—as well as many papers targeting specific language users, such as Vietnamese, Chinese and Spanish.

Why live in Tarzana, CA?

The Tarzana neighborhood offers the best of both worlds. The area is known for its quiet suburban vibe, minimal traffic congestion, great schools and easy access to major highways. While Tarzana is considered a wealthy Los Angeles suburban neighborhood, there are still smaller homes, duplexes and apartments in Tarzana that offer more affordable options. Residents are just a small drive away from some of the area’s most sought-after outdoor recreational destinations, while also having access to shopping, restaurants, nightlife and other activities right within the community. While the neighborhood may not be a foodie’s paradise, it does offer plenty to please the palate, from locally owned eateries as well as well-known chains. Young professionals, families and retirees alike will all find Tarzana a suitable neighborhood to put down roots.

What Tarzana landmarks should I see?

Los Encinos State Historic Park located just minutes away showcases exhibits related to the agricultural enterprises of Rancho El Encino’s many owners and cultures. Nearby Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park offers spectacular views and numerous walking trails. The area also includes a number of other parks and landmarks, including Westridge-Canyonback Community Park, Topanga State Park and Old Town Calabasas, featuring historic Leonis Adobe and Museum.

What is there to do around Tarzana?

In addition to its many shops and boutiques, Tarzana is home to several shopping centers, including Topeka Plaza Tarzana Plaza and Rexford Center. Tarzana is also within easy distance to many art galleries and theaters. Backing up to the Santa Monica Mountains, the community offers a multitude of hiking and nature-viewing opportunities, featuring several state parks as well as the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, which offers hiking, climbing, camping, horseback riding and more.

Any annual festivals or Tarzana events to know?

While there are several smaller neighborhood events in Tarzana to suit a variety of interests, by far the most prominent of festivals is the Tarzana International Film Festival. The community of Tarzana has a rich legacy in filmmaking, serving as a primary location from films as diverse as Casablanca and Terminator 2, as well as many others. The festival’s intent is to champion the works of international filmmakers from around the world.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Tarzana’s location puts it within an easy drive to so many attractions in southern California, from Hollywood and Universal Studios in Los Angeles to Disneyland Park in Anaheim. Spending a day in Beverly Hills offers high-end shopping and celebrity watching. The popular Santa Monica Pier offers visitors an amusement park, concessions and some awesome views. Joshua Tree National Park gets its names from its bristled, twisted Joshua trees and serves up some awesome views as well as hiking trails.

Where is the best place to move in Tarzana?

With the breathtaking beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains along its southern border, it’s easy to see why most property owners in Tarzana opt to live close to the mountains, with its spectacular views. But for those longing for a more rural lifestyle with space for horses, the Melody Acres equestrian neighborhood within Tarzana may be just the ticket. The majority of the community's most affordable residences, including smaller homes, duplexes and apartments in Tarzana, can be found just north of Ventura Boulevard.
