Abilene Overview
Abilene, TX, is an underrated gem of a city. Founded as a stop along a railroad, the city has blossomed into a thriving commercial center. Abilene's central location and moderate size provide a fantastic combination of small-town ease and big-city amenities.
What is the history of Abilene?
The city was founded in 1881 and was soon made the county seat of Taylor County. It played host to a massive army base in World War II, and many soldiers returned to the area after the war to set up their new peacetime lives. The city has been active in promoting business and revitalizing sections of town, such as the downtown area.
How is the weather in Abilene?
Abilene's central-western location in the state means it sees more rain than the arid desert regions in the far west of the state, but it has far less humidity than you'd find in east or even central Texas. Winters are cold, with lows hovering near freezing and a low amount of snowfall, and summers are typically hot, with highs in July and August usually reaching into the mid-90s. Spring and fall tend to stay in the 60s and 70s. April through October sees the most rain. Note that Abilene can be subject to typical spring and summer storms with hail and lightning, and the area does lie within Tornado Alley, though storms have tended to be weak.
How do I get around town?
Like much of Texas, Abilene is car-oriented. While the city is on the smaller side geographically, you can't walk from end to end (and in summer, you won't want to walk at all). Abilene is served by the CityLink bus service on weekdays and Saturdays. There is no bus service on Sundays, though. The city also has a regional airport, the Abilene Regional Airport.
What is the Abilene commute like?
The main highway is Interstate 20, and there are several smaller highways radiating out of town. Commute times tend to stay under 20 minutes.
What are the local media outlets?
The Abilene Reporter-News is the daily paper. The city is served by several AM and FM radio stations with formats ranging from Christian contemporary and Tejano to classic rock and talk radio. Abilene has extensive television services, too, allowing residents to receive not only the standard terrestrial signals of ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX, but also Univision and many cable channels.
Why live in Abilene, TX?
Abilene's moderate climate, moderate size, and convenient location, along with obvious civic pride, make it a stable place to live in Texas. Easy access to greenbelts like those surrounding Lake Fort Phantom Hill to the north and Kirby Lake to the south mean you are not lacking for outdoor activities. Rent is reasonable in the city.
What Abilene landmarks should I see?
In addition to Lake Fort Phantom Hill and Kirby Lake, the city also has several parks within its limits. It's also home to Dyess Air Force Base and quite a few universities, considering the size of the city, such as Abilene Christian University and Cisco College, a local community college. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center has a campus here as well. Several buildings near downtown are considered landmarks, including the Texas & Pacific Depot, which is now home to part of the Chamber of Commerce.
What is there to do around Abilene?
There is a downtown walking tour that spotlights some of the better-known buildings in the area. Abilene is bursting with museums and galleries, such as the Frontier Texas! historical museum and the Center for Contemporary Arts. Fort Phantom Hill contains the ruins of an old army base from the 19th century. And of course, there's the Abilene Zoo with over 1,000 animals and several exhibits.
Any annual festivals or Abilene events to know?
Visit the Children's Art and Literacy Festival in June for a look at children's literature, or take in the Western Heritage Classic in May, complete with a rodeo and chuckwagon races. The West Texas Fair and Rodeo takes place in September.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
You are not lacking for vacation spots if you live in Abilene. Drive a few hours northeast to the DFW Metroplex or southeast to the Central Texas Hill Country and its anchor cities of Austin and San Antonio. Those looking for more rural trips can head southwest to Big Bend or the small town of Marfa, home to the Marfa Lights phenomenon.
Where is the best place to move in Abilene?
Take a look at the south and southwest parts of town for newer housing. That area has been seeing quite a bit of growth.
