What is the history of Albany?
English explorer Henry Hudson discovered Albany in 1609. The original inhabitants were Native Americans, but French settlers colonized the area in 1624. Known as the French Walloons, the settlers called the land Fort Orange. By 1629, the Dutch West India company set up a trading post in the area. The Dutch populated and traded in Fort Orange until the English took over in 1664. King Charles II gave Fort Orange to his brother James, the Duke of York and Albany.
