We’ll go over what makes this a top city in the Empire State — and what life is like there for residents!

What is the history of Albany?

Albany has been New York’s capital since 1797 — but its history dates back much further than that. The Dutch built a trading post in the area in the early 1600s. During that time` Henry Hudson sailed up the river that would end up bearing his name. With the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers flowing through the area` Albany became a major site for international trade. Did you know that the city was also the site of the very first passenger railroad? Over the years` Albany became known for its agricultural industry — after serving as a site for the fur trade in its early years. Today` manufacturing` healthcare` logistics` and defense have joined agriculture as the city’s leading industries!

How is the weather in Albany?

Looking forward to snowy winters? Albany gets close to 60 inches of snow on average every winter! That makes it a great place for winter activities` like skiing` snowboarding` and sledding. Highs in winter are usually in the 30s` with lows in the teens and 20s. But summer weather makes up for the cold with daytime temps in the low 80s and nighttime temps in the 60s. Highs in spring and fall tend to range from the 40s to the 60s` with lows falling in the 30s through 50s. That gives you mild weather for enjoying the area’s fall foliage or spring flowers. Albany has its share of sunny days throughout the year — but you’ll also get some rainy weather` especially in spring and fall.

How do I get around town?

Wondering if you should look for Albany rentals near public transportation or rely on a car? The region’s Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) operates multiple bus routes throughout Albany` especially in the downtown area. You may be able to take buses to get where you need to go if you’re near these routes. For the outer areas` having a car comes in handy for getting around. Need to travel out of town? Albany International Airport in the northern part of town offers flights to tons of destinations. Amtrak runs an Empire Service train to and from the city and NYC daily. You can also catch Amtrak trains from Albany to other locations — including Niagara Falls and Buffalo!

What is the Albany commute like?

It’s nowhere near as long as commuting times in nearby NYC and other major cities. You’ll spend an average of 24 minutes getting to and from work as a resident in Albany. Of course` this can vary` depending on weather` traffic — and where you’re commuting to. You might also need to add more time to your commute if you’re traveling during morning and/or evening rush hour! Several major roads run through Albany. I-87 runs along the western side of the city in a north-south direction. I-787 runs along the eastern side of the city near the Hudson River` also in a north-south direction. I-90 passes through the northern part of Albany from east-west.
