Stand up and walk out your front door. Go ahead. We’ll wait. Did you see any moose? Any black bears, grizzly bears, mountain goats or lynx? No? That’s because you don’t live in an apartment in Anchorage Alaska where mother nature is close enough to hit with a badly thrown rock. Anchorage has more going for it than nature (although some people won’t require any more). It has a good economy, ample job opportunities and recreation.

Anchorage is home to almost 400,000 people and lies on the coast of Alaska. Anchorage started in 1867 as a small port town ideally suited to restock ships working the routes between Asia and the West Coast of the United States. It became a territory in 1912 and a state in 1959.

How is the weather in Anchorage?

Anchorage was built next to the ocean which warms it up substantially. Winters in Anchorage are warmer than North Dakota, South Dakota or Minnesota. Summers last for over five months and winters a little under seven months, approximately the same as Salt Lake City, Utah.

How do I get around town?

Anchorage is essentially a small city, smaller than Salinas, California, and it’s not spread out. Public transportation is called People Mover, and you can go anywhere you want to for less than the cost of a Sunday newspaper.

What is the Anchorage commute like?

Anchorage has just two freeways, Alaska Route One and Seward Highway. The passenger rail system is not used with regularity. It offers daily service between Anchorage and Fairbanks during the summer but just one trip a week during winter months.

What are the local media outlets?

The Alaska Dispatch News is the most read newspaper in the state. It won a Pulitzer Prize in 1976 and 1989. They’re the only newspaper to win a Pulitzer in Alaska’s history. Anchorage brings network television to the city through KYUR (ABC), KTUU (NBC), KTVA (CBS), KTBTY (Fox), KDMD (Telemundo), KYES (MyNetwork), KAKM (PBS). General Communication Inc. (GCI) offers the only cable television programming in the city.

It ranges from Koots with men in plaid wool shirts and heavy shoes talking loudly about sports to Club Paris with low lighting, excellent food and an intimate ambiance. Anchorage has serious institutions like the Alaska Center for the Performing arts, the Anchorage Concert Association and the Sitka Summer Music Festival which presents more than 600 performances a year.

What Anchorage landmarks should I see?

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail runs for eleven miles along the coast. It’s designed for non-motorized traffic and is completely paved. It’s a good way to learn about animal and plant life. The Alaskan Native Heritage Center features live performers and a representation of traditional Native American Life. You can walk inside Native American homes and see how the first Alaskans lived. Chugach State Park is the third largest State Park in the United States with nearly half a million acres. In the park, you can take the Lakeside Trail along the shore of Eklutna Lake for 12.7 miles. The trail ends at Ekluktna Glacier. Be sure to enjoy the stunning blue glacial ice.

What is there to do around Anchorage?

Other than the outdoors, Anchorage takes justifiable pride in the live theater available in town. The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts stages Broadway shows such as “Disney’s the Lion King”, “Grease” and “The Phantom of the Opera. It also hosts Alaska’s only opera company and the Anchorage Symphony orchestra. It makes a nice change from loud nightclubs.

Any annual festivals or Anchorage events to know?

On the first Saturday of March, dog sled owners from around the world come to Anchorage for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Twenty one teams of owners and dogs charge through white-out blizzards and temperatures of -100 from Anchorage to Nome. The current record is about eight and a half days.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

A trip along Alaska's Inside Passage weaves through the islands in Alaska's southern panhandle. The route is protected from ocean storms and provides opportunities for whale, bear and salmon watching and sea kayaking.

Where is the best place to move in Anchorage?

Downtown Anchorage is perfect for people working in the business district. You can walk to work and enjoy the cultural and historic sights along the way. Government Hill is ethnically diverse with many Koreans and other Asians. It's home to the Anchorage Curling Club. Eagle River is home to 22,000 residents and provides a shopping hub for Anchorage and surrounding cities. The educational system in Eagle River is vibrant and dedicated owing to the large number of young families in the area.
