Athens Transit provides bus service for much of the city, including free transfers to the University of Georgia. Greyhound offers larger extended service, and bike lanes are commonplace on most major roadways. The Athens-Ben Epps Airport has been in operation since 1917, and rail is largely regulated towards freight.

An array of U.S. highways crisscross the city, including U.S. 29, 129, 441 and 78. Georgia State Route 72 is also a popular route, and traffic tends to be reasonable for the most part. Commuter times show some signs of delay, especially during the construction peaks of spring and summer, although still far less compared to larger cities such as Atlanta.
