Explore Baltimore
When you leave your apartment for a day on the town, it's something a tough decision to decide just which of Baltimore's great landmarks to take in. If you're an art fan, there are numerous museums around town, all promising something different, but for a look at something truly unique, you need only step over to the American Visionary Art Museum, or AVAM, where the works of lesser known, up-and-coming artists is put out for everyone's enjoyment. Apartment-ites won't find work like this is any other museum in town, and maybe not even the country. If you're looking for work that is truly original, then the American Visionary Art Museum is the spot for you. When you walk into the main building at the AVAM, you'll notice that the building itself is a work of art. With its modern touches and contemporary feel, walking in to this museum is like walking into a building of the future, and once you're in, you can't help but fall under its spell. AVAM is a testament to the power of the untrained eye and mind, focusing entirely on the work of those who are self-taught, throwing away the rules that schools and society put upon them. These bohemian ideals present themselves vividly in the works held within, each offering up something bold and unique, with a surprise about every corner. Apartment-ites have never seen a museum like this, and no matter how hard they search, they might not find another one like it. The museum is broken up into four different areas for art. The first is the main building, which houses all the major exhibits, which change every few months so that the experience is always fresh. The tall sculpture barns houses large pieces of metalwork and sculpture that comes through, as well as hosts lectures throughout the year. You can also check out the giant whirligig and sculpture plaza, where you can find one of Baltimore's newest landmark, the 55-foot whirligig, and features a wide open area which is great for socializing with friends. Also make sure to check out the gorgeous wildflower garden, which act as a beautiful metaphor for the artists own work inside. They're also a café if you're hungry, and a gift shop for souvenirs. Apartment-ites who are looking for something new in the art world need only take the trip down to Baltimore's number one place for unique visions and artistic endeavors, the American Visionary Art Museum, where everything you ever knew about art is blown away and replaced by pure magic.
