Bloomington is a city located in the heart of Illinois with a population of 78,730 according to the 2014 census. People love to visit the numerous shopping outlets and its noted historical landmarks. What is the history of Bloomington?

The place, soon to be named Bloomington, originally bordered a grove occupied by The Kickapoo Indians. Europeans arrived in the year 1820 and started to envision a design for newly donated land from James Allin. His 60 acres would be auctioned and multiple farmers were interested in purchasing the lots because the land had rich soil. Additionally, commerce and business transactions drew in people from other parts of Illinois to the downtown area, including a famous one like Abraham Lincoln. In 1900, a fire broke out and destroyed a large part of downtown Bloomington, however, it was rebuilt rapidly, becoming a booming commercialized hub with railroads, agriculture, and insurance companies. You can see the results of this today, with nineteenth century buildings still on display and successful businesses prospering downtown.

How is the weather in Bloomington?

As in most regions of Illinois, the temperature in Bloomington can be hot, humid during the summertime and cold throughout winter. The temperatures for spring are usually between the high of 73 �F and the low of 29 �F. For summer, the temperatures can climb to the high of 86 �F with the low of 61 �F. During fall, the temperatures ranges are up to 77 �F and down to 31 �F. Winter temperatures are normally between the high of 37 �F and the low of 14 �F.

How do I get around town?

" To see all the sights of Bloomington, you have multiple options, but you will need a car to travel to the downtown area. After you arrive there, you can park your car at one of the convenient free parking locations, then walk around and explore the different quaint and modern shops as well as eateries this town has in store for you. Along with the Bloomington-Normal Public Transit System, Bloomington also offers services including Amtrak, Greyhound Lines and The Central Illinois Regional Airport, which provides trips to cities such as Chicago, Champaign and St Louis. "

What is the Bloomington commute like?

" There are many roads to get to the city of Bloomington. It was planned that way because it made it easy for people from surrounding communities to come and do busy. Interstates 59, 74 and 55 meet at a junction, while the major expressways US 150 and 51 passes right through the town, along with route 9. These multiple roadways make for light to medium traffic, even during the morning rush hour."

What are the local media outlets?

The Pantagraph is Bloomington�s major paper, it is distributed to 107, 000 daily subscribers and 60 other counties. If you would rather listen to some music or talk radio, they have you covered there too. Their stations include: WJBC 1230 AM - Talk, WGLT 89.1 FM - Blues & Jazz, WGLO 95.5 FM - Classic Rock, WZIM 99.5 FM - Sports, and NOAA - Weather Radio

What Bloomington landmarks should I see?

" This place contains much history for people to uncover. For instance, the Miller-Davis House, this was the house of David Davis, a senator and Supreme Court justice as well as a mentor for Abraham Lincoln. This mid-Victorian house was completed in the year 1872 and shows how the upper class lived in that era. They had a lead-lined tub, gas-lightening and flushing toilets. Since Bloomington is one of the places Lincoln would visit frequently as a lawyer practicing in Springfield, this place is dedicated to information about him. The McLean County Museum of History features his early speeches, letters he wrote in the town along with other items of his memorabilia. Along with those items, there are plenty of exhibits connected to the Native Americans and the famous Route 66. "

What is there to do around Bloomington?

As stated throughout, Bloomington is noted for its huge amount of stores, people come from afar to purchase goodies they cannot find in their towns. The makers of those tasty sweet and salty snacks called Beer Nuts have their headquarters here. The Beer Nuts Factory gives tours of their facilities, along with free samples of 18 different flavors of what has made them famous. You can buy their brand name merchandise in the forms of baseball caps, T-shirt and even boxer shorts.

Any annual festivals or Bloomington events to know?

" The Illinois Shakespeare Festival is an outdoor event, with picnickers taking in the Elizabethan singing and entertaining jesters sauntering pass. Springtime is heralded in with the Spring Bloom Arts Festival, where artists get together to display their work. This includes paintings, woodworking, handmade jewelry, glass and sculptures. "

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The city of Normal is Bloomington�s sister city. It is less than two miles away and offers some fun activities. For folks with kids, the Children's Discovery Museum has a bunch of interactive learning exhibits such as the 2-story climber that goes to the third floor and the Discovery Store with educational programs. Known for it is �to die for� bread pudding Biaggi's is a famous Italian restaurant where you will find an array of fine cuisine. This line up includes dishes like meaty chicken Parmesan, shrimp and crab cannelloni, lemony salmon and shrimp risotto. Carrot cheesecake, moist white chocolate bread pudding and butterscotch custard are just a few of the delicious desserts you will find here.
