Cathedral City, located in the Greater Palm Springs Metropolitan Area and in the Coachella Valley, is a beautiful and fun place to live. What is the history of Cathedral City?

The Cahuilla Indians were the first inhabitants of the Coachella Valley and the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians established its reservation in the area. The reservation encompasses about one-quarter of the city. In 1850,   Col. Henry Washington of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recorded the name Cathedral Canyon because its canyons resemble the inside of a great cathedral. When the first subdivision was built in 1925, it was named Cathedral City.

How is the weather in Cathedral City?

The weather is clear year-round. Temperatures are hot in the summer and cool in winter. Temperatures in the summer tend to be in the 90s, temperatures in the winter tend to be in the 50s. Typically the range is from a low of 46F to a high of 107F.

How do I get around town?

Although there are some walkable areas, most errands around the city require a car. Sunline Transit Agency does operate bus lines and taxis throughout the Coachella Valley, including from Cathedral City to nearby Palm Springs. 

What is the Cathedral City commute like?

The average commute time in Cathedral City is 21 minutes. Most people drive to work alone in their cars, a few carpool, use public transportation or bicycle. Major highways include Interstate 10, which runs east and west, and state route 111, a north-south route. Traffic can be challenging on State Route 111 going through the city because the road narrows there.

What are the local media outlets?

"The Desert Sun, based in Palm Springs, is the primary newspaper for the Coachella Valley. The top three radio stations according to Yelp are KWXY107.3 FM,  a pop station, KJJZ, soft contemporary, and KClb FM 97.7, a rock station. Local news is available on several TV stations. KESQ, the ABC affiliate, devotes extended hours to news coverage, especially in the morning. KMIR news, the NBC affiliate, received a Golden Mic for the ""Best Newscast in Southern California"" from the Radio and Television Association of Southern California."

Why live in Cathedral City, CA?

Cathedral City has been honored as one of the top 10 bargain retirement spots and as one of America's Most Livable Cities. It is a haven for those who love the outdoors or the arts. Warm temperatures year-round make it a great place for hiking, horseback riding or jogging. The Valley also boasts 125 golf courses and eight public parks. A Public Arts Initiative has placed art in public areas throughout the city, which also has many art galleries.  The city also is close to many other recreational opportunities in the Coachella Valley.

What Cathedral City landmarks should I see?

Cathedral Canyon, from which the city derives its name, is located south of the city. The Fountain of Life statue, a project of the Public Arts Initiative, is a downtown landmark. The Big League Dreams Sports Park softball complex features softball fields that are replicas of four major league parks.  Colleges serving the area include the University of California Riverside - Palm Desert Campus, California State University San Bernardino - Palm Desert Campus and the College of the Desert.

What is there to do around Cathedral City?

Enjoy the outdoors: Take a hike, play a round of golf, take a splash in the Fountain of Life Statue. Sit in your yard and enjoy the sunset over the San Jacinto Mountains. Attend a production at the Mary Pickford Theatre or go ice skating at the Desert Ice Castle. Take a walking art tour of the city or stop into one of the many galleries. Shop the distinctive stores in the Perez Road Business District or dine at a restaurant on Date Palm Drive. 

Any annual festivals or Cathedral City events to know?

The Cathedral City Hot Air Balloon Festival, which brings more than 30 balloons from across the United States, is held in November. The Coachella Music and Arts Festival takes place in Indio, about 18 miles away, each April.  The Palm Springs International Film Festival, held in Palm Springs in January, also is popular. Indio also holds an annual Tamale Festival in December. Two other Greater Palm Springs Festivals: Modernism Week, held in February, and the White Party, billed as the largest gay dance party in the world and held in April, also make up the festival calendar.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

San Diego, which provides 70 miles of coast, is about two hours south of Cathedral City. Los Angeles, a little less than two hours north of Cathedral City, is another good location for a city vacation. Catalina Island, 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, provides a resort experience. Las Vegas, Nevada is about four hours away.

Where is the best place to move in Cathedral City?

Neighborhoods in Cathedral City are distinctive and close-knit. Explore them all to get a flavor of what is available. One example is the Date Palm Drive and E Canyon Drive neighborhood. A moderate-income neighborhood, this area's average monthly rent is $1668. Most who live here are employed in executive or management occupations.  An upper-middle-class neighborhood, Colonial Drive and Cypress Road, has rents averaging $1970 a month.
