Claremont Overview

Do you want to enjoy the big city life while residing in a quiet suburban space? If so, just set your sights on the ever-beautiful Claremont, California. Located just 40 minutes east of LA, this suburb allows for quick access to all the greatest restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues around. The modern suburb design creates a tight-knit community feel as well, making it a great place to come home to at the end of the day. Great schools, ample job opportunities, and a close proximity to vacation spots galore complete this picture of perfection in Pomona Valley.

What is the history of Claremont?

As the transcontinental railroads arrived in Southern California in the mid-1800s, developers set out to create the city of Claremont. Through the years, the city rose up around Pomona College, resulting in residential spaces overtaking the original citrus groves. As a nod to its college roots, the north-south streets all received university names, while the east-west streets stuck with a number theme. Soon after the streets got their names in the early 1900s, the city was incorporated. New additions continued to fill out the space including the huge Stone Canyon Preserve housing development and the nearby Wilderness Park.

How is the weather in Claremont?

Living in Claremont apartments gives you all the sunshine you could need all summer long. So, if you love hot weather, this is definitely the place to live. Temperatures reach their peak in July and August, often landing at around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Thankfully, you have many beaches within an hour’s drive for when you want to cool off. The winter season brings much cooler temperatures to balance everything out. The lows only land in the 40s, however, so you don’t have to worry about getting geared up for the snow.

How do I get around town?

With Claremont’s roots as a major stop along the transcontinental railroads, it just makes sense that it’s public transportation system leaves little to be desired. So, you can always count on being able to easily catch a bus at the Claremont Transit Center and its many other stops. Foothill Transit runs interlinking routes through the city plus to La Verne, Pomona, and San Dimas. Additional express routes can take you to Los Angeles and Pasadena as well. If you prefer to cycle it out, the city has bike lanes on most major roads. When you want to get out of town, the Metrolink Train Station allows you to catch a train to six nearby counties.

What is the Claremont commute like?

With its ample public transportation keeping the roads relatively clear, Claremont doesn’t have a huge traffic problem. Like anywhere, roadway improvements can slow things down considerably. So, while living in Claremont apartments, it’s wise to check the traffic reports before heading out. Heavy traffic is common when heading to Los Angeles on the San Bernadino Freeway, however, especially on the weekdays. On the weekends, you can expect a 40 minute drive, but weekday commutes are up to 1.5 hours each way. Other major routes through the city include the historic Route 66 and the Foothill Freeway.

What are the local media outlets?

As with all suburbs of Los Angeles, Claremont news mostly lands on Los Angeles TV and radio stations. While at your Claremont apartments, you can tune into CBS (Channel 2), NBC (Channel 4), CW (Channel 5), and ABC (Channel 7) for local news reports. For truly local reporting, however, you’ll want to tune in to KSPC by turning to 88.7 on your FM dial. Operated by Pomona College, KSPC keeps their ear to the ground in Claremont, ensuring you’re always well informed. If you prefer to read your news, just subscribe to The Claremont COURIER or read the articles right on their website.

Why live in Claremont, CA?

If you love outdoor adventures, Claremont is the place to be. This wonderful city sits between beautiful Mt San Antonio and the many beaches located just an hour south. So, whether you want to go camping in the mountains for the weekend or just want to spend the day at the beach, great times are never far away. Want to ride along the historic Route 66? You can do that quite easily, stopping at the many landmarks, restaurants, and more set along the way. When you do elect to spend time at home, the serene neighborhood feel at every end of the city always serves to delight.

What Claremont landmarks should I see?

Since Claremont came to be in the mid-1800s, it’s full of amazing historic landmarks. The Claremont Station, Claremont Packing House, and Sumner House are just a few of the major sites you can see. Built in 1887, Pomona College is another must-see historic site located right in town. The historic Route 66 runs through the center of the city as well, allowing you to look into the past while enjoying all its modern improvements. While not historic, other notable landmarks include the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, California Botanic Garden, and Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery.

What is there to do around Claremont?

Although you can easily go to the beach, visit the mountainside, or go on a drive down Route 66, sometimes, it’s nice to stay in town and do something nearby. Thankfully, as a resident of apartments in Claremont, you’ll find there are plenty of great things to do. If you like to spend time in nature, you’ll love visiting the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park or California Botanic Garden. For when you want to stay indoors, consider seeing a show at the Bridges Auditorium, Laemmle’s Claremont 5, or Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theatre. Museums abound as well, including the ever-popular Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology.

Any annual festivals or Claremont events to know?

Most of the community festivals happen in Los Angeles, Pomona, and other nearby cities. You can find small-scale community events right in the city, however, like the Claremont Farmers & Artisans Market. Held on Sunday each week, this marketplace allows local farmers, artisans, and craftsmen to hawk their wares to the public. On top of that, the first Saturday of each month is dedicated to the Art Walk through town. If you love that experience, then you’ll want to put the Village Venture Arts & Craft Fair on your calendar each October. The California Botanic Garden hosts a wide variety of events as well, including their coveted Things That Go Bump in the Night event.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Weekend getaways are a breeze while living in Claremont apartments. Want to spend the weekend in the big city? Just book a hotel room in Los Angeles. If you prefer to stay by the beach, then you could go to Long Beach, Irvine, or Malibu without driving too far. Road trips are always a blast, too, especially with Route 66 to kick off your travels. And when you really want to get away for a while, you’re just a few hours from Tijuana, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

Where is the best place to move in Claremont?

Most of the apartments in Claremont lie at the south side of the city near Pomona College. This makes them great for everyone imaginable, including students, young professionals, and families. If you find a place right next to the college, you’ll get to live in walking distance from fantastic shops and restaurants on South Indian Hill Boulevard. Living further to the west takes you away from the hustle and bustle of college life without compromising on convenient access to great local venues. So, you really cannot lose no matter where you decide to get a great apartment in this city.
