Duluth Overview
With steep streets like San Francisco but uniquely situated on Lake Superior, Duluth is a place like no other. If you’ve ever wanted to live in the birthp+lace of pie a la mode, apartments in Duluth are just the place for you.
What is the history of Duluth?
Duluth was an important outpost for fur trading in the 1800s, and it later developed into an important iron ore mining location. In the early 1900s, Duluth was the leading port in the US and saw wave after wave of immigrants due to an industry and mining boom. The prosperity soon ended, however, when from the 1950s-70s Duluth endured a huge economic decline when the iron ore ran out, in response, the economy shifted to tourism.
How is the weather in Duluth?
Duluth has a humid continental climate, and the summers there are much wetter than the winters. The winters are long and cold, on average, 106 days of the year don’t even reach 32°F. Summers are warm, though, with daytime temperatures in the mid 70s.
How do I get around town?
The Duluth International Airport flies to Minneapolis and Chicago daily. The Duluth Transit Authority oversees the local bus system, and the Skyline Shuttle provides daily transportation to the Twin Cities (aka Minneapolis-Saint Paul) and the airport there. Several highways run through the city, so driving is another common way to get around.
What is the Duluth commute like?
Many interstates and highways serve the Duluth metropolitan area. I-35 comes from the southwest and ends in Duluth. US Highway 2 runs through the southern half of the city and US Highway 53 runs through the middle.
What are the local media outlets?
Duluth hosts a slew of newspapers, such as the daily Duluth News Tribune and the Duluth Budgeteer News (a weekly newspaper also known as “The Budgeteer” or “The Budge”). It’s also the home of nationally distributed magazines such as Lake Superior Magazine, Cabin Life, and New Moon Magazine. Duluth also features the usual variety of radio and TV stations.
Why live in Duluth, MN?
Duluth is simply an inspiring place. It’s the home of many innovations: pie a la mode, the Duluth Pack, pizza rolls, and the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, to name a few. Though its innovations might make it seem like a whimsical place, Duluth has a solid economy with jobs in many different areas, including health care, retail, higher education, engineering, aquatic science, aviation, and tourism. Deluthians also know how to take advantage of their surroundings—skiing, sailing, and surfing are popular activities—and living in apartments in Duluth will allow you to become a true Deluthian.
What Duluth landmarks should I see?
Among the landmarks Duluth is known for is the Lake View Store, which was the first modern indoor mall in the US. It was built in 1915 and is located in the Morgan Park neighborhood. Canal Park, another remarkable place to visit, is an old warehouse district that was converted into a recreational area and now features many restaurants, shops, and hotels, as well as other attractions.
What is there to do around Duluth?
There are many unique things to keep you occupied in Duluth. Hunt for Lake Superior agates at Park Point and other shorelines. Continue getting the most out of nature by walking the 39-mile Superior Hiking Trail or bike the Piedmont mountain biking trail—both offer amazing scenic views. Or you can stay indoors and check out the Great Lakes Aquarium, the only all-freshwater aquarium in the United States.
Any annual festivals or Duluth events to know?
The Bayfront Blues Festival is held every August and is one of the upper Midwest’s largest outdoor music events. The Duluth Fall Festival is held in late September, it involves a parade, concert, carnival, and continuous live entertainment.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Though you may rarely want to, there are many places to escape to for a few days outside of Duluth. Camp in nearby Superior National Forest, where you can rent a cabin, bring in an RV, or set up your own campground. Or you could take a more urban vacation and head to Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota.
Where is the best place to move in Duluth?
According to Duluthians, there is no “bad” place to live in the city. Duluth has a number of neighborhoods, each with its own feel and attractions. Duluth is built on quite a hill (thus the steep streets), so some neighborhoods have wonderful scenic views, such as Piedmont Heights and Bayview Heights. If you want to live near the University of Minnesota Duluth, you can live in the Chester Park neighborhood. If you want to have easy access to some of the landmarks and attractions previously mentioned, try living near the downtown and Canal Park areas in the Central Hillside neighborhood.
