Edmonton’s winters can vary in both severity and length, as does Alberta in general. Spring and fall can both be a bit unpredictable and are short. How do I get around town?

The Edmonton Transit System is the primary public transit agency for the city, and it offers a large fleet of buses as well as the Edmonton Light Rail Transit (LRT) line. Edmonton is served by one major and several smaller-sized airports. The largest is the Edmonton International Airport that is located south of the city near Leduc. There is also an extensive multi-use trail system in the city, allowing for walking or biking. Cars are an option as well.

The average commute time for Edmonton residents was listed as 25.6 minutes in 2024. This means Edmonton features one of the lowest commute times of Canada’s six largest cities. Edmonton connects to Saskatchewan and British Columbia via the Yellowhead Highway. The main freeway in the city is the Anthony Henday Drive, which encircles the city and was completed in 2016.

There are several media outlets that serve the Edmonton area. Radio station options include CBC Radio One Edmonton: CBX, HOT 107 FM, CKUA Radio Network, and SONic 102.9. Print media include a weekly community newspaper called the Edmonton Examiner, the Metro News Edmonton, and the Vue Weekly. Television stations include Global TV Edmonton, CTV Television Station, and the CBC, just to name a few.

Fort Edmonton Park is located in Edmonton and is Canadas largest living history museum. Another interesting landmark in Edmonton is the High Level Bridge, which is the world’s highest bridge that is still used by street care today. The old-time streetcars go from downtown to Whyte Ave throughout the summer (on weekends). 

What is there to do around Edmonton?

The Edmonton River Valley is the largest urban green space in all of North America. It features 7,300 hectares, which makes it 18 times larger than Stanley Park in Vancouver, as well as being larger than all of Manhattan in New York City. Edmonton also features the smallest national park in Canada, as well with its Elk Island National Park, which has been key in bison conservation. In addition, when getting indoors instead of outside sounds like a better way to spend a day, Edmonton also boasts one of the world’s largest malls with its West Edmonton Mall. In fact, this mall is so impressive that it actually held the moniker as the World’s Largest Mall between 1981 and 2004.

Any annual festivals or Edmonton events to know?

Nicknamed “Canada’s Festival City,” Edmonton really shines when it comes to hosting some of the country’s best festivals, featuring some sort of festival nearly year-round. In fact, the city boasts over 50 annual festivals to choose from, including the Flying Canoe Volant, the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival, the Silver Skate Festival, the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup, SkitsAfire, Dreamspeakers International Film Festival, and Edmonton’s International Beerfest to name just a few. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Although Edmonton offers many options for its residents within its borders for entertainment and fun, leaving the city offers some additional opportunities, such as the Banff National Park and the Jasper National Park, about four hours away from Edmonton. Banff National Park is Canada’s first national park and is the flagship of the nation’s park system. Jasper National Park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies and is known for its extensive trails and abundant wildlife. There are also many cities that are an extremely short flight away from Edmonton, which make good destination options, like British Columbia, Calgary, Denver, Colorado, and many others.
