Theme parks aren't just for kids anymore. So whether you've got some rugrats or your apartment is kid-free, Paramount's Carowinds Theme Park is the best place to get your rollercoaster fix. Located in Fort Mill in the Charlotte area, this park straddles the NC/SC border and also boasts a huge waterpark featuring the largest bodyslide on the East Coast (80 ft). Like most theme parks, there are a variety of rides to suit all ages, but the newer, faster rollercoasters get bogged down with heavy lines, and the rides themselves are often the shortest of the lot. Aside from the 10 coasters there are 5 Thrill Rides and an entire mini-land dedicated to Nickelodeon, including an antique wooden carousel called the Nick-O-Round. There are also a few themed rides every Hallowe'en, notably a 3-D Scooby Doo haunted house. The only downer is that the park can get a little messy in the summer, which, compounded by the steaming weather, makes the water park a better bet if you want to go on busier days. Your choice of food here is standard amusement park fare, but there's lots of it, and no shortage of cool drinks or ice cream carts if the heat is too much. A good tip if you're going to go at least twice a year is to spring for an $80 season ticket, since admission for adults is $47.
