The area was first settled by famed French-Canadian trader Louis LeFleur. It became the state capital in 1821 and was renamed Jackson after General Andrew Jackson. Another great aspect of living in Jackson is the terrific weekend road trips you can take around the state. Mississippi has a petrified forest in the town of Flora just north of Jackson. The Windsor Ruins to the southwest and were once a thriving plantation that became a significant post for Confederate forces and it was stormed by Ulysses S. Grant and more than 17,000 Union troops. Although an accidental fire destroyed much of its architecture, its Greek-like columns are an amazing sight. And, living in Jackson means you are less than a three-hour drive to New Orleans and the annual Mardi Gras festival.
