What is the history of Johnson City?

Henry Johnson established Johnson's depot in the 1850s in anticipation of the Virginia Railroad Company's plan to lay tracks from Knoxville Tn, to Virginia. Johnson's depot was the first railroad depot along the new rail line. In 1869, it was incorporated by the State of Tennessee as Johnson City, and Henry Johnson became the city's first mayor. Later the North Carolina railway made its way through Johnson City en route from Tennessee to North Carolina. Today, those early railroads are part of the Norfolk Southern Railway system, running close to 20,000 miles throughout the eastern United States.

How is the weather in Johnson City?

The long warm summers are humid, and the winters are cold and wet, but short. Expect cold, but not necessarily freezing weather from November through February. Winter temperatures average between 28°F and 53°F, with the coldest days and freezing temperatures in January. Spring and Summer bring warmer temperatures from 66°F in May that steadily increase up to 84°F and above on the hottest days in July. Then the temperatures will taper off as fall moves in with spectacular color.

Johnson City Transit (JCT) has several bus routes to help commuters get around. The system is especially handy for college students, attending East Tennessee State University, a little over two and a half miles from the city's center. JCT provides a trip planner as well, so you can map out your route ahead of time.

When it comes to driving, I-26 starts in the Tri-Cities Region at U.S. 11W. The winding urban section heading through Johnson City connects to U.S. 19W from the northeast. What are the local media outlets?

The Johnson City Press is the town's newspaper, founded in 1934. The paper won the UT/Tennessee Press Association General Excellence Award in 2017 and also in 2019, as well as the AP Malcolm Law Award for Investigative Journalism in 2017 and 2018. King Commons Park is right in the middle of downtown Johnson City. It covers three acres with recreational and event space. Northwest of the city, lies Gray Fossil Site and Museum. It's an active Miocene-era excavation site with mastodon fossils. And, to the east, you'll find Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park, complete with a replica of 18th-century Fort Watauga. This college town offers plenty of outdoor adventure and indoor attractions too. If you enjoy annual festivals, then you'll find what you want here in Johnson City. During the summer, there's the city's newest free festival, based in Founders Park called Meet the Mountains. If you like beer, then you'll be happy to know that Johnson City has a festival in April called the Thirsty Orange Brew Extravaganza. One such place to vacation close by is the Meadow Creek Mountain Ranch that stretches for 40 acres along winding country roads in Parrottsville. You'll find Appalachian-style lodging, a homestyle café, and trails for horseback riding or hiking.
