In 1854, a steamship delivering immigrants was meant to land at the place where theáSmoky Hill River and Republican River meetáand call the area Manhattan. However, the water was too low to land, so they stayed 20 miles east up the river and called that land Manhattan. Instead, the area now known as Junction City was first called Millard City, after Captain Millard of the immigrant's ship in 1855. It was briefly renamed to Humboldt in 1857 before finally being named Junction City in 1859 due toáits location at the junction of Smoky Hill River and Republican River, which then become the Kansas River.

ince Junction City is a smaller town, you're unlikely to spend much time sitting in traffic. Interstate 70 flows through the east side of town from Kansas City and Topeka and on to Salina. Highway 77 serves the west side of town, running north/south. Highway 18 comes directly from the west into the center of town where it becomes W 8th St as it hits Highway 77. Other major streets you'll hear mentioned a lot include Jackson Street and Washington Street which both run north/south through the entire length of the town, and Ash Street, with runs east/west on the southern part of the city.

Your five-days-a-week local newspaper is the Junction City Daily Union. There are three radio stations for the city. Listen to news and talk radio on KJCK 1420 AM. For Top 40 hits, tune in to KJCK 97.5 FM. You can also hear Christian Contemporary music from nearby Meade, Kansas, at KJIL 92.3 FM. For television news, you'll hear from the stations of the Topeka, Kansas, television market. These include PBS on channel 11, CBS on channel 13, NBC on channel 27, FOX on channel 43, and ABC on channel 49.

Right across the street from Bartell House is Heritage Park which features the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Arch. Just two blocks west from Heritage Park is the Old Junction City High School which is now the Geary County Historical Society Museum.

What is there to do around Junction City?

To get out and enjoy nature, visit the Geary State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area. Here you can take a hike to view some gorgeous waterfalls, or pull out the boat for some good fishing. To learn more about the plants and animals of the area, visit the Milford Nature Center. The C. L. Hoover Opera House is known for putting on great performances in a historic venue. If you're looking for some entertainment, hit the lanes at Junction City Bowl for open bowling or to join a league. Grab some popcorn and settle in for the latest flicks at Westside 4 Cinema. During the summer months, take the kids to the Junction City Municipal Swimming Pool.

Omaha is just another hour northeast of Lincoln if you want to take on two cities at once.
