In 1854, a steamship delivering immigrants was meant to land at the place where theáSmoky Hill River and Republican River meetáand call the area Manhattan. However, the water was too low to land, so they stayed 20 miles east up the river and called that land Manhattan. Instead, the area now known as Junction City was first called Millard City, after Captain Millard of the immigrant's ship in 1855. It was briefly renamed to Humboldt in 1857 before finally being named Junction City in 1859 due toáits location at the junction of Smoky Hill River and Republican River, which then become the Kansas River.

For Top 40 hits, tune in to KJCK 97.5 FM. You can also hear Christian Contemporary music from nearby Meade, Kansas, at KJIL 92.3 FM. For television news, you'll hear from the stations of the Topeka, Kansas, television market. These include PBS on channel 11, CBS on channel 13, NBC on channel 27, FOX on channel 43, and ABC on channel 49.
