Kearny Overview

From epic beaches to the nightlife of Atlantic City, New Jersey is famous for its hectic East Coast lifestyle, and that's why some residents choose to live in the charming suburb of Kearny. The small town is a little quieter than nearby Newark and just a stone's throw away from Manhattan. Residents of Kearny know the town as "CAR-knee," but out-of-towners will usually try to call the town "KEER-knee," which might elicit a laugh or two from a local. However, as long as you remember how to pronounce the town's name, you shouldn't have any problem settling in this relatively quiet suburb.

What is the history of Kearny?

Kearny, New Jersey, was once part of a massive parcel of land owned by Major William Sandford, who named his property New Barbados Neck in 1668. Upon settling in the area, Major Sandford paid 20 pounds sterling to the leader of the local Hackensack people, who occupied the area before Europeans began colonizing the Atlantic Coast. The community would undergo a few name changes over the next few centuries. It would eventually become the Township of Kearny in 1867 after a local politician asked the legislature for permission to create a new town. Kearny would grow significantly over the next several decades and eventually become a thriving factory town. Thousands of Irish and Scottish immigrants relocated to Kearny for work, and their love of soccer ultimately inspired the town's nickname "Soccer Town, U.S.A." Today, Kearny is home to around 41,000 people who enjoy a safe yet dense suburban environment, with commuters enjoying easy access to nearby Manhattan by train. It's a quiet town yet conveniently close to all sorts of jobs, amusements, and entertainment.

How is the weather in Kearny?

From frigid winters to sweltering summers, the weather in Kearny, New Jersey, runs the gamut from blowing drifts of snow to hot days worthy of a giant glass of cold lemonade. If you decide to move to Kearny, the best weather is in late April or early May, when the air is usually dry and a pleasant 70 degrees. You'll generally see rain most often in the late summer, around September, and the snowiest months are January and February. Sometimes, you'll even see snow into mid-April. Kearny is a fantastic place to live if you love to see the seasons change, and you'll need a four-season wardrobe in your closet.

How do I get around town?

As a suburb, Kearny is a surprisingly walkable place with tree-lined sidewalks, parks, and neighborhoods. Although the town was once known chiefly for its factories, the average Kearny dweller today lives in a house or apartment with parents or couples often commuting by train if they work in New York City or taking their car to their job in nearby Newark. The city has a healthy public transportation system, and you can even travel by bus if you wish, rather than by car. Over 14 percent of the population uses mass transit to get to work, with most commuters using the train system.

What is the Kearny commute like?

On average, residents of apartments in Kearny, NJ, have a slightly longer commute than the nationwide average, with Kearny residents taking just over 31 minutes to get to work. Nationwide, commuters spend a little over 26 minutes getting to work. Nearby interstates that travel through and around Kearny include I95 and I280, and the closest state route is Route 21. Bear in mind that I95 is a toll road, so you'll want to consider that cost when planning your way to work, or anywhere else you decide to drive. Traffic can get beastly at times on the highways of New Jersey, and that's why buses and trains are so popular for commuters.

What are the local media outlets?

When you turn on the television on at your Kearny apartment – particularly in the northern part of the state that sits near New York, Manhattan, and Staten Island – your news stations will come from New York City, which is home to some of the longest-operating television stations in the nation. CBS, NBC, Fox, ABC, and the CW inhabit stations 2 through 11, and you can find PBS stations for Newark and Garden City a little further up the dial. If you want your local news from a paper, you'll read The Observer, which was first published in 1887 as The Arlington Observer. The area is also loaded with radio stations, and you'll find every genre available along the dial, from jazz on 88.3 to urban contemporary on 107.5.

Why live in Kearny, NJ?

One of the best reasons to find an apartment in Kearny is if you have a family and want to experience a friendly small-town atmosphere while still having access to a wealth of employment and entertainment opportunities. Not only is Kearny a great place to live for families, but it's an excellent option for anyone who works in New York City and needs a home that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Kearny is a perfect choice for commuters, as well as families who want to spend their weekends at soccer games and have fun at the beach. The town has a surprising number of cute shops and cozy local restaurants, but big-city adventures are never too far away.

What Kearny landmarks should I see?

Ultra-famous landmarks like the Statue of Liberty are pretty close to apartments in Kearny, but you don't have to leave town to see some interesting sights and landmarks. The Highland Hose No. 4 firehouse was built in 1895 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Simply taking a walk around town will offer views of beautifully maintained homes built in the 19th century. At one time, the city was home to a famous filming location used in the HBO series "The Sopranos," and fans would visit to see the building used for Satriale's Pork Store. Unfortunately, the building was torn down to make way for a parking lot.

What is there to do around Kearny?

The most popular activity for Kearny, New Jersey, residents is soccer, and the city's "Soccer Town, U.S.A." nickname is well-deserved. You'll find teams available for the kids, as well as adult leagues. You can visit Kearny Dog Park for some canine socialization if you have a dog. The park is sandwiched between the Passaic River and Passaic Ave. If you're more of an indoor person, you'll find that Kearny has more than its fair share of delicious restaurants and fun bars. The nightlife isn't crazy in Kearny, but it's undoubtedly great for meeting up with friends and "chillaxing" near your Kearny apartment.

Any annual festivals or Kearny events to know?

Within Kearny's city limits, you'll want to head out with an empty stomach to the Kearny Food Truck & NJ Craft Beer Festival, which is held right off Passaic Ave. You'll find several annual festivals near Kearny apartments that cater to family outings and offer music, outdoor recreation, and arts & crafts. In the fall each year, you can visit the Ridgefield Park Downtown Street Fair, the Saddle Brook Fun Family Street Fair, and the Garfield Fall Family Street Fair. Nearby Jersey City hosts a Water Lantern Festival in the fall, too.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The biggest and brightest vacation you might take as a resident of a Kearny apartment is a trip to Manhattan, which is probably worth multiple weekends and vacation days since it has some of the most famous landmarks in the entire world. With the Atlantic coastline so close, you can also arrange a beach vacation or a weekender at the seaside and make believe you're on "The Jersey Shore." Atlantic City and its casinos are about 125 miles south if you're willing to undertake a road trip.

Where is the best place to move in Kearny?

The suburban nature of Kearny means that there are many opportunities to live on quiet neighborhood streets. Around half of the population rents, and some communities range from brand new dwellings to antique buildings that have been renovated for apartments. If you like to shop and eat out frequently, southwest Kearny features a large commercial shopping area. For outdoor enthusiasts, residences along the southern edge of Kearny are near West Hudson Park. Some of Kearny's most desirable real estate is along the eastern side of town.
