Kew Gardens Overview

As one of only seven planned garden communities in the area, Kew Gardens today is a residential community located in central Queens. Neighborhoods contain apartment buildings and spacious single-family homes, and the population was tallied at 23,000 in 2010. While Kew Gardens is located conveniently to many attractions and even the big city of Manhattan, it still manages to hold on to a sense of tranquility, giving residents a respite from the hustle and bustle.

What is the history of Kew Gardens?

As previously mentioned, Kew Gardens is one of seven planned garden communities in Queens. Its modern construction began in the late 19th century and continued into 1950. However, the history of the land itself goes way back in time as the area was originally settled in the 1630s by the Dutch. It remained a rural space until the 20th century. The planned garden community that began in 1909 first included the destruction of a hotel and golf course for which the area was known. As part of the garden community, the area was built in the neo-Tudor architectural style. Kew Gardens was named as a way to pay homage to the luxurious botanical garden of the same name located in southwest London.

How is the weather in Kew Gardens?

Generally, Kew Gardens average temperature will vary greatly depending on the time of year. Temperatures for the most part feel cold for half the year. In mid-July, which is the warmest time of the year in the area, high temperatures usually reach around 90 degrees.
