Lawndale Overview
If you want to live in the South Bay area of Los Angeles in a safe suburb that's not touristy like the nearby beach towns of Hermosa or Manhattan Beach—Take a look at apartments in Lawndale. With a population of less than 40,000 and a median age of 30 something, Lawndale is a great place to raise a family in an affordable part of South Bay. Truthfully, it's a lot of fun to be single here, too. It's easy to get around on foot or by bus if you don't want to drive. And of course, you're close to all the best beaches in Southern California.
What is the history of Lawndale?
Lawndale and the neighboring communities of Inglewood and Manhattan, Redondo, Hamilton, and Hermosa beaches were all part of cattle grazing pastures, once upon a time in the early to mid-1800s. In 1868 Robert Burnett bought the entire area for less than $30,000. He was a sheep farmer, however. And after losing most of his herd to drought, Burnett began dry farming, orchards, and raising barley. He also got into real estate selling subdivisions. In 1890, a seaport opened in Redondo. Soon, the area began incorporating with a railway that ran throughout Los Angeles and what is now Lawndale. Charles B. Hooper officially founded Lawndale in 1905. The city finally incorporated on March 3rd, 1948.
