New England holds plenty of rich American history, so while you're living in this area of the country, it's worth it to delve into it a bit. What better place to pursue history than at Minute Man National Historical Park in Lincoln, just west of Boston. Here, you can explore American Revolution battlefields, cross a bridge of the "shot heard round the world," hike an original battle trail, or read the writings of American Revolutionaries. Your starting point will be the Minute Man Visitor center at the east end of the park. A multimedia presentation describes the story of the park showcasing Paul Revere's ride and various battles, and a forty foot mural depicts the fighting between the American rebels and the Brits. Housed in an old-fashioned looking barn, it's as if you're stepping back into 1775, when the history of this time period begins. If you're in the mood for a hike, walk along the Battle Road Trail, where the American Revolution was launched. Along the route are the Paul Revere Capture Site and the Hartwell Tavern Historical Area, which you can access in ways other than walking. The Hartwell Tavern is an authentic period home that belonged to Ephraim and Elizabeth Hartwell and their family in the late 1700's. While the home sat on a large and prosperous farm, the house itself also served as a tavern, and was a frequent stopping point for travelers going to and from Boston from outlying areas. Other locations to visit are The Wayside: Home of Authors, where early writers recorded the history of the revolution, and North Bridge, where the famous Minute Man statue by artist Daniel Chester French is found. History is fun to explore, so take a trip from your cozy apartment lifestyle and get back into the past for a day.
